You can go into 4wd hi at (gonna mess the exact mph, but these are close) speeds less than 45 mpg, 4wd lo at less than 15. no need to reverse to unlock. just push the button and you can feel the axles engage and disengage.
This is assuming you dont have the ever-so-common leaking vaccuum hubs. I never trust the "shift on the fly" capability of the system. If I am anywhere close to needing 4wd, I jump out, manually engage the hubs, and shift the switch into 4-hi or whatever. Personally, I also put the truck in neutral, just to be easier on the drivetrain, but supposeduly it's not necesary.
Ok, so the Warn manual are a slightly different set-up. In manual, the axles are engaged (turning with the wheels) but the differentials are free. When you push the button in the cab, engaging 4wd, the differentials engage and the whole thing is 4wd.
In locked, the system is in 4wd regardless of the switch in the truck.
The difference here (Warn vs auto-lock OEM) is what happens when the hubs are in manual. With the Warn the axles are locked to the wheels and turning so there is some additional friction/drag/wear. With the OEM that doesn't happen.
Does that make sense? Trying to put it into words....
