I remember a previous thread about the large valance and people looking to either cut it down or replace it. I had read someone had noticed the 2WD trucks valance was a few inches shorter. Has anyone replaced their valance with the 2WD one yet? Has anyone else came up with a different solution?
I have been looking for a 2WD one to compare and it looks like my local dealer has a 2WD in now. So I plan on heading over there to see if it is shorter then the 4x4 model.
I just went to the dealer and measured the difference between the 4x4 and the 4x2 valance. The 4x4 measures about 7 1/4" and the 4x2 measures about 4 1/4". I checked the bolt pattern just in case and it looks to be the same. So in my opinion it is definitely worth replacing to bring up that valance 3".
I checked out the price at the parts department at the dealership and it is $113.
Now I'll start looking online for a better price. Once I get it put on I'll show a picture.
You should ask the dealership if you can just switch them and you will do all the work. Worse that happens is they say no, which is the most likely outcome, but by off chance the person you ask is hungover and does not feel like dealing with people that day he may say yes. Or if you know someone pretty well there they might let you. Its worth a shot and saves money.
You could also do what I did, when you find somebody here with a 2WD that wants the 4WD valance, just pay the shipping and swap.
I had an '08 Job 1 that came with the tiny valance, Job 2's had the big one. There was a guy that wanted the small one, I wanted the big one, we traded.

Although the shorter valance might be appealing to the eye, I personally wouldn't trade em til I verified with Ford that it wouldn't screw with the warranty. Most of those valances are there to assist in the cooling process of the engine. Air flow and such. IDK, just a thought.
It is sooooo easy to cut off, I used a jig saw because I wanted it to be real straight, another guy used a razor knife which may have been okay too.
I've pulled my 5'er this summer (only 11,000 lbs) and the tranny (198 F) and engine (210 F) were exactly where they are when not pulling anything. Some have suggested it may hurt you mpg's, I'm not sure but if I lose 0.3 or so mpg's that's fine with me because it just looks stupid.
I remember some have cut it off. I was thinking about this last night. I may try to use a piece of metal lined up on the cut line and use a router to cut it down. I'll see how that turns out. I have used razors to cut plastic before and it seems to wonder slightly causing small waves in the cut.
One of the things I liked about the 2WD one is that it is is molded just like the 4wd at the bottom having that curve at the bottom. By cutting the larger one it is simply flat. So at least it makes me feel better knowing when I cut it and if it doesn't look very good I have another option for a reasonable price. I am pretty sure I'll find it for around $50 and some Captain Morgan

Reason: makes more sense
I have a pic of mine after I cut it, it's in one of the folders or albums or garage things under my profile. I took duct tape and put it along the valance, then used an adjustable carpenters square and sharpie, set it at 3" and just pulled it across the bottom edge, I smoothed the corners a bit by freehand with the sharpie then grabbed the jig saw.
I think the hardest part of the whole thing was ratcheting of the brackets on the truck. I should have pulled the truck in the shop instead of doing it in the garage, then I coulda used air compressor.
