i have a 1968 f-100 with a big block 390 with a steal crank and after market carb. me and my father took it for a drive yesturday evening, and after embaressing a few rice burners. my dad said it sounded like it was missing, i could not hear any change in it. but every time i push the excelarator from a dead stop (at a stop light) it kinda, sounds like the motor stops running, then starts again. like it cuts out, then comes back almost emeditly. (not very good at discribing this soundd, i know) its also a little rough to start.
i was woundering wat he might be hearing, and wat might make these things happen. and how i might be able to check? for a problem, and the remidy for it.
also, my battery does not want to stay charged, after about two or three starts, it starts to struggle to start the truck. we tested the connections, there is no junk or goop on the termonals.
does this have anythign to do with the alternator?
(sorry if i am asking to many questions, just ask me to stop if i am)

does this have anythign to do with the alternator? Yes, it sounds as though the al;ternator is not putting back the energy used to start the engine, into the battery. Both conditions, problems, bog from standstill while idling and difficult starting suggest lack of enrichment fuel when throttle plates suddenly let a big gulp of air into the engine. Look into carb. throats, hold choke plate open if closed, move throttle open quickly; a squirt of liquid fuel should be seen entering throttle bore. If not, fix carb.
Does truck have automatic transmission?

Which after market carb do you have ?
Carb maybe out of adjustment air/fuel screws
Put volt meter on battery with engine running, voltage should be no less 13.2-13.8 not much over this..
If under 13.2 have it checked at most auto parts some will check while it's running and tell you what's wrong.
If you don't have a old motor manual book that covers the basics of how to do's on this classic. I will say you'll be lost when to need really need the info and your computer crashes and it will be to late. I can see your a young guy trying to learn about what's wrong with your old ford classic. Us old farts on here all had to read the books if we ever want to learn anything about what kept these old trucks running.

If you can find a Ford Truck Shop Manual of the vintage like your truck, Holley carb. info will be in it; they were OEM on many trucks.
I have many such manuals, and could email you that info, but I am away from home for 4 months. Sorry. impish
