exhaust troubles

I have a 68 Ford F-100 with a 390. i have a exhaust leak, so i pulled the manifolds off, and the gaskets just disintagrated. i cant find anywere close that can sell me new ones. Is there any way i can make like a temp gasket or do something so i can at least get to work? untill i can get some of the interwebs?

as hard as it is to get parts, surprisingly when it comes to fe engine parts, they are common enough that i was shocked when i asked for something and they were able to not have to order it, and its sitting right on their shelf. and fel pro exhaust gaskets, valve cover gaskets, thermostat housing gaskets, intake gaskets etc etc, are one of those things.
unfortunately i dont think you can make your own due to the extreme heat, and how it needs to be a certain material.

lesson learned. and i've done this and screwed myself hundreds of times.
if you are going to take on a job. big or small. be sure to allow yourself plenty of time. and what really makes things stressful is when its a vehicle that needs to get you to work the next day. plan a job out thoroughly. and for instance, if you are going to pull something off, go out and buy the new gaskets first. even if you are leaning towards they are probably fine, replace them anyway that way you wont have to do it again for a long long time, and its one less thing that can break down on you.

You can find manifold gaskets for a 390 at Pep Boys, O'Reilly Auto Parts, etc...they're pretty common.

I have heard of some people not putting gaskets between the exhaust manifolds and the heads on FE's. Said it was tight enough fit. Might be worth trying if you have the time.

Composite exhaust gaskets were not installed from the factory. They are available to correct manifold warpage. I have not had exhaust gaskets in my 390 for 10 years. Take the manifolds and have them surfaced, if the heads are flat you will not need any gaskets.

Yeah with heads that havent been burn out. no real need for a gasket with some high temp rtv copper or red to aid in sealing. and a good flat face unburned manifolds. Replace all the bolts that our grade 8. Also make sure the upper bolt threads our not sticking out passed the threaded boss or they will rust in time and most people will break the bolt next time they try to remove them, the rusted threads bind up and bingo a lot of 4 letter words will fallow..
