im working on a 76 f150 and since i have bought this truck to drive around i have also inherited the previous owners wonderful wiring fixes. most of them i have figured out, the 1 head light issue, short in the passenger side parking lamp and no high beams but i seem to be having a hard time figuring this one out. the blinkers seem to work left and right just fine until i push the brakes, then the right side works but the left (drivers) stays on with no intermittent blinks. could this be caused by the missing cam switch in the column?
The cam you are talking about is just a mechanical part correct? The only problem it could cause is not letting the switch fall into the correct position. I would push up and pull down on the switch lever a little bit and see if the problem corrects itself.
If that doesn't work, you may have a problem with the switch or the wiring in the column. There are two signals that come into the column;
The brake switch signal.
The turn flasher signal.
The turnsignal switch in the column takes these two signals and mixes them together so the rear lights work properly, since the rear lights do triple duty. One filament is the running lights and is not related to this circuit. The other filament in the rear bulbs is the brake filament and the turn signal filament.
When the turnsignal switch is in the center position, both rear lights are hooked to the brake pedal signal coming into the switch. If you move the lever left or right, the switch takes the proper side and disconnects it from the brake pedal signal, and hooks it to the turn flasher wire.
And this all happens to one half of the turnsignal switch. The other half feeds the front turn lights and the lights in the cluster. But this is not as complicated as the rear section, since the front signals don't come on while braking.
yeah its a mechanical part, the more i think about im thinking that they may have wired the brake switch wire or crossed it into the blinker as it only happens with the left signal. maybe in taking that apart i can find the reason there are no reverse lights.
