I would just hit up the junkyards. I personally wouldn't spend a grand on axles, but if the rest of the truck is halfway decent you could break even parting it out and then scrapping it.
Heck might even make some money, just something to think about.
It seems to have settled down recently, but I remember a couple years ago where HP D60's were routinely priced at $1500 because they are the supposed 'Holy Grail'. Now I'm seeing more and more in the $8-1200
I think it all depends on where you are and wether or not the seller knows what he/she has. They are a good axle to swap into jeeps and other offroad toys, they can be had for 150-200 if you know where to go.

A high pinion D60 front from a 78/79 in the boneyard? I believe that when my **** turns purple, and smells like rainbow sherbet.

I need to find out where this "where to go" place is

X2. They go for $1200 and up on ebay all day, every day. If you can find ANY complete D60 front, from any make, in any condition, for $200, you should buy it and at the very least double your money. Find a 78/79 D60 front from a Ford for two bills, and you are the luckiest man on this forum. I've scored two, and in both instances had to buy the whole truck. One was $650 and the other $450. The first I parted out and ended up with a free D60. The second I scrapped and ended up with a D60f and a married NP435/205, for $100ish. In both cases, the owner had no idea what they had.
this guy obviuosly knows how hard these axles are to find and what they really are worth. I scored mine for a cheap $500 at a wrecker! I've put about 3500$ into it now with chromoly axles, gears, rebuild and steering upgrades..
