my dads 2003 PSD, starter will not turn when you turn the key. batterys are good, was running fine. checked all fuses related to starting. is there a way to check the starter relay? seems to be electrical or starter locked up. any suggestions? thanks for the help.
If it is an automatic, Try putting in neutral and see if it will start.
There is a starter solenoid on the inside of the passenger fender that will go bad. You can jump across the terminals and if it does not start then, it could just be the starter is bad.
it is an auto and i tried in neutral, no different. not to familar with his truck, looked for the solenoid, is it in a box or something, i did not see it?
By chance, did u check fuse 30 in the cab? If its blown, it will not crank. If it is blown, unplug the fuel heater in the bottom of the fuel filter housing
the starter solenoid is on the inside of the passenger fender directly behind battery right beside hood shock. it has two larger wires on it and some smaller wires. one of the big wires should have power all the time. The other one should get power when the key is turned. If not u need to see if the smaller wire is putting power to the relay when the key is turned, if it is and the big termina does not get power, the relay is bad. If the big relay gets power on both big terminals when key is turned and it does not start, you need to check connections at starter and batteries. If no power to big terminal and no power to small terminal when key is turned, it will be a fuse, broken wire, or key switch.
I THINK that they deleted using the starter relay in either 2002 or 2003, and all the high-current switching is done directly at the starter motor. But I'm not certain about that.
Aww crap, Pop is right. Good catch Pop. I apologize for that. I forgot they did that before the 6.0 trucks.
The same tests will apply but they will be at starter motor. It will prob be pain in the butt to see too. If u can find the small wire and check it for power when the key is turned, it will tell u if its starter or not. If it gets power and no start, then starter is bad. This assumes that all your battery connections are good and proper voltage levels. If you are in doubt of that at all, hook a volt meter to the batts if u have one and try to crank with someone watching it and see if it drops below 10volts. 11.5 v is probably the least I would want to see but truck will not crank at all below 10 volts.
Is everything acting like normal? i.e. Turn the key. WTS light comes on then goes off, and then no start? If so it is most likely the starter solenoid or ... Starter. If the light doesn't work like normal, go checking your fuses like the other guys have stated, if the PCM fuse is blown, unplug your fuel bowl heating element first. Go from there. Most likely it is you starter solenoid. If you are brave enough you can turn on the key and jump the solenoid manually with a screw driver, just touch one of the large posts with power to them to the smaller one, and don't touch the metal on the screwdriver, it will shock you.
Have you crawled under there and physically checked the starter. On my 03 one of the bolts broke. I had to hold the starter in place while my son cranked it. We made it home and the next day replaced bolts and was good to go.
