Cleaning Rims?

Any suggestions for cleaning rims that have been neglected for awhile? I haven't touched them since winter set in. The right front is so bad it looks like rust. But, it's really about an eigth of an inch of brake dust, grime, etc. that managed to form a pretty tough "skin".

I'm trying to avoid the elbow grease factor.

Any home remedies or powerful (but safe) store brands?

Eagle One makes a good wheel cleaner. Just spray, let it soak, and rinse. You might need to get in there with soap afterwards but it'll make things a lot easier. I think any wheel cleaner in the car care aisle will work. Just becareful if you have clearcoat or chrome wheels. They will scratch so read the labels on the cleaners.

Dude, whatever you do, DONT use Eagle One's A2Z cleaner. You didn't mention if you have stock rims or not, but when I used the stuff on mine, it completely ruined them. Find one that's NONAcidic. I think Meguiars makes a pretty good one that's supposed to be safe for all rims.

Best thing to use on rims is soap and water with a brush. May take a little more work, but it will save the clearcoating on your wheels.

That Eagle One works great on chrome rims. It'll knock off the brake dust and light rust spots just by rinsing with a garden hose.

Since Colorado has started salting the roads, I have been using it every time I wash and the chrome still looks new, even though they are about 4 years old.

Your lucky!

They use magnesiun chloride on I-70 and the state highways. It's a liquid derived from the Great Salt Lake and they spray the roads when ever a storm is predicted. It's terrible on the windshield also, it just blurs everything up so you can't see.

I claim two states as home... Indiana and Tennessee. IN puts enough salt on their roads that it looks like an extra half inch of snow and TN loves to salt their roads when there is the slightest prediction of snow (which usually doesnt come).

Never heard of anyone using gravel. Heard of sand being used.

I would LOVE a change to sand/gravel.

Cleaning Rims?

Welcome to the wonderful grime and crud that we here in the river valley deal with every year. The worst and purest source of automobile "cancer" in the world.....ROAD SALT....especially the salt water spray that they use for bridges and overpasses...that stuff is already in the perfect form to cling to body panels and rust them into oblivion!

After two weeks of off-and-on snow, sleet, and ice here in St. Louis, my black and grey '92 still looked like it was covered in snow two days after the last of it had melted away. I buy washer fluid like a mother with triplets buys milk!
