I went to go hook up my new radio, and the one that was in was put in before I bought it, and all they did was hacked into all the wires and everything, so after taking out everything that they put into it and just having the original wires, I have these..
Blue wire with red stripe
Yellow wire
Green wire with yellow stripe
Those all go into a plug that would plug into the radio...
So, I need to know what is what. Which is the power, which is the ground, which is the... other thing.
as its been said its very very simple to install using just a test light or voltmeter. You need 3 wires to run the unit. constant power, test light will light whether key is on or off. Acc (keyed power) test light will light only when key is on. Ground just secure a ring connecter to a good metal surface. and then just run new speaker wire
Blue/Red = Dash Light Dimmer This is correct, light blue/red stripe = dimmable dash backlighting
Yellow = Constant 12+ You should be using yellowwith a black hash (a keyed power source) , pleasedon't try to use a solid yellow wire.
Green/Yellow = Keyed 12+ This is always-on power for clocks & radio pushbutton memories and whatnot
You can check that pretty easily with a volmeter or test light. Yes, please do this....
I run an added on ground. It does work with just the ground through the antennae though.
On that constant 12v...consider running a fused wire straight to the battery or solenoid. I "lose" my memory if I try to start my truck with the radio already on. Like if I shut the truck off with the radio on, when I restart the memory vanishes. The 12v connection is constant, but I think my aftermarket radio draws too much power and the voltage drops too much when cranking. This even happens with a new battery. I haven't tried going straight to the battery, but I think that it would solve the problem.
I guess we're saying that the radio will ground through the antenna ground, BUT...you should install a ground. I've got my radio harness ground going to the steel support of the dash. I don't really trust the ground through the antenna, but it does work. I remember not being able to figure out why the radio still worked without a ground hooked up. I didn't realize it was grounded through the antenna connection.
But, I've been wrong before and I'll be wrong again, just watch and see......
I see in one of your other threads you got your lights working, how cool!!!! And,
you got to take it all apart yourself and put it back together, you've now got a
MUCH better idea of how things are working and where to go looking for
problems in the future.
