If glow plugs and the block heater won't get it running, I am going to guess both are not working correctly or you have other problems.

Ford 6.9: Is your truck an 86 or older with the stock glow plug controller? If so, the glow plug light is powered by the glow plug side of the relay, and the controller has no idea if the plugs are working or not, odds are you have dead glow plugs.

When it comes to ether, used in moderation and with common sense, it is perfectly safe, however, I don't recommend it to anyone due to the not so large difference between just enough and too much, and the consequences of too much, I have seen it cause a hydrolock and bend connecting rods more than once.

As for the rather snide comment about first gen PSD's, I have yet to plug mine in this winter, and, well, YouTube - -27 Cold Start
Thing even has a couple not so great injectors, and around 213K miles...

My IDI would never start on the glows only at that temperature, ether, yes, block heater and glows, yes, glows alone, no.

I got away with acquiring tools for work before Christmas. I definitely wouldn't get away with "fiddling with it" on Christmas eve. The crack precludes using the BH. The GP's are new Berus with no power. Hence the Ether.

I use Ether like I used my GPMG. Short controlled bursts

If you simply must spray... I have had good luck with WD-40 instead of ether. I've used it in JD, CAT and Detroit, but never used it yet in my 7.3. Quick starts and a little lube.

i tried wd40 once when i was ran out of ether and was late for work. Didnt start and i used quite a bit of wd40. Ether is the only why when i get some money ill put plugs in it and see if it will fire with out ether.

Once you get plugs it should work fine. I also tried WD with no results. My procedure now is a 10 second crank to generate some heat then a 2 second burst of either, half throttle and she fires and runs after a further 5 second crank.
