Angry loosing coolant

i was doing my routien 3000 mile oil change checking all the fluids and noticed my coolant level was down so i topped it off with water untill i could get the motorcraft gold coolant the next day i went to add the coolant and it was down about half gallon again. i have no white smoke no hesitation and no coolant or water in the oil. i went to the dealer and the looked at the truck and said egr cooler oil cooler and or head gasket and two weeks to fix it. the truck has 57 thousand on it. i noticed a white residue above the reserve tank and all over the place. i herd that the coolant leaves a white residue. anyone know if the dealer is just screwing me or if its somthing simple like a bad reserve tank ?

When is the last time coolant was changed, and who did it?

Describe the procedure use to change it --- if you did it yourself.

Was the cooling system breached (e.g. hoses, thermostat, etc. replaced) and air allowed to enter system?

Have you pressure tested the system (hot and cold), and verified that the cap is not leaking?

Lets see if it is something simple.

ive never changed the coolant becuase it only has 57000 on it and its 100000 mile coolant all i have done is add coolant it seems like it is coming somwhere near the resivior because it looks like it splashed up from somwhere near there. they said it could be from exhaust preasurizing the coolant system through a blow headgasket but i dont have any white smoke and it runs great

From your description these are classic symptoms of a blown head gasket.

great oh well do you think two weeks is a reasonable time to do head gasket and egr cooler and oil cooler

Mine did the same thing last week at 47K miles. It was the EGR cooler. My head gaskets were OK. I bet yours is as well. Covered under the 5 year 100K warranty. made it by a few months.

try removing the passenger side exhaust manifold to turbo v pipe.pressure up the coolant system and see if coolant comes out of the back of the egr cooler.if it does then you need to replace the egr and oil cooler at the same time.more than likly the oil cooler is restricted and caused the egr cooler to fail.i have installed several bullitproof diesel egr coolers with great results.my cust with egt gauges sated 200-400 degree drop in there egt temps.if it doesnt leak out the cooler then you probably got a week head gasket.most dealers are to quick to sell head gaskets and a egr cooler when some of the time its only the egr cooler and not the head gaskets.imop

2007 model year, 57,000 miles. Are you still under warranty?

If so, that is the dealer's problem!

If not - check for exhaust in coolant with test strips.

If you got exhaust in it... bad news.

If not, EGR / Oil cooler is your first suspect.

Did you run any mods / tunes on it?

Check EGR cooler using test outlined above (wet / drip).

-----------------

When I first got my very used 2005 (250,000 miles) truck, the coolant bottle was empty.

Rather than assume anything, I filled it, refilled it and carefully logged the results.

Turned out to be merely air in system from an incompetent coolant / hose change job --- and it held its content fine once topped up.

Last week, I had a bit of a scare when the bottle level dropped (I haven't checked since summer).

So... I took out my trusty calculator, and calculated how much coolant shrinks going from 65F to 0F (current temp).

I then measured how much it took to top it up.

Turned out the entire amount of the "missing" coolant is explained by shrinkage of 26 liters of coolant.

Unless I continue to lose coolant, I consider the problem solved.

So don't jump to conclusions and do expensive fixes unless you,

a) are on Ford's nickle

b) have a super competent dealer tech

An unnecessary repair by an incompetent / inexperienced tech is just as likely to screw you up as no repair at all.

How much do you trust the dealer techs?

The real good ones who wrench 6.0s all day are hard to find.

If you don't trust this dealer, why would you let them work on your truck?

I go to a huge amount of trouble, and ended up finding one of the best 6.0 experts within 200 miles to work on my ride.

Needless to say, his outstanding work mean I never had to have it towed in...

Oh... pray that they don't use the stored information (with Ford diagnostics) that tells them you used a tuner....

Tip --- buy an extended warranty now!
