instant power boost
I have a rather odd situation with my bone stock 94 f250 7.3 idi (non turbo). Curious to know if anyone has experienced this little bonus.
My truck runs great all day every day, but when it gets to near empty on diesel and before it surges, the engine picks up in power considerably like some ones justed fitted a turbo without me knowing. Its awsome but it doesnot last long before I have to switch tanks. The engine starts and runs fine, blows no smoke and has pulls well.
Its got me stumped? Anyone had this?
the air is mixing with your fuel, and advancing the timing in the pump, making it run close to correct if your timing is very retarded to start with.
it's not a turbo feel.it's a freshly tuned up diesel feel.

since we have to computer,we need to set and adjust the timing manually approx every 20k miles to keep it in check.otherwise it becomes retarded and low on power.your feeling how it runs with likely overkill advance timing for a bit in that situation, but at least you know how timing effects your power first hand.i haven't run out of fuel,so haven't felt this before.kinda hard on things, because the fuel system is cooled with the fuel, lubed by it as well.id try and be a little more careful and switch tanks sooner.
have your trucks timing adjusted using a timing meter for peak performance all the time.

Thanks for all your replys, yeah I know I probably should not run it low on fuel, but Diesel is expensive here (Australia) so I like to use every last drop and no I am not Dutch.
I will check my static pump timing if I can locate a timing light failing that I will play around a bit with timing on a dyno to see what I can come up with.
Whilst on the power topic, I have been looking into a turbo kit for my 7.3. I really like the non waste gated Hypermax pulse kit, but cant find any ones coments, good or bad on one. The ATS kit seems to be popular and so is the Banks sidewinder. I just want good pulling power for towing?
Any suggestions, these engines and trucks were not sold here new so there is not much info on them.
Thanks
So when the IP sends a fuel pulse to the injector, once the injector opens the pressure in the line drops fast and the injector pops closed.
You can compress air.
So when the IP puts some air in the injection line with the fuel, the injector pops open and the air expands keeping the line pressure higher longer until the pressure drops enough for the injector to pop closed.
So basically the air in the injection line is making the injectors inject more fuel as long as there is fuel in the line with the air.
If you could look fast enough, you would probably also see some black smoke at the same time.

I will tell you that there is no comparison between stock and banks turbocharged-I get to 60mph in like 6 seconds (before it was like 11-12 seconds). Although I haven't towed anything with it yet, I have heard nothing but good from the guys who have towed with their banks turbos. Before Oreo gets to you: perhaps you should start another thread discussing the topic of which turbo you want. Or just read on here, there is tons and tons of info on here already. Just use the search function and you should come up with alot of info.
