I have a 06 f-450 have about 50,000 miles on it i have heard the 6.0 are rough on turbos.Howe can i test mine to make shore it is working properly and can they be serviced or just replaced with a stronger one.
i have an early 03 with 191,000 miles.the only things i have replaced was an icp sensor, and an alternator. did replace brakes, rotors and calipers too. i run 4 oz's of wally world 2 stroke ashless stroke oil and 4 oz of powrstroke grey cetane booster ,plus 5 gallond of hess clear kero to each 37 gallon fillup.
In my experience the only reason 6.0's are tough on turbo's is from lack of use. The variable vanes get rusted from sitting and have to be cleaned. If you work your truck like it's supposed to be worked (hard) then it's a good package. If you putt around like a soccer mom it will require more maintenance IMHO.
Clean OEM filters , oil, and fuel make a huge difference. There is a HUGE tech folder here that will give you more info on your truck. Bismic has a spread sheet he will email to you that has a vast wealth of info on truck maintenance and longevity also.

Warm the truck gently and when fully hot (190 deg oil and coolant) stand on it. You should see about 25 psi boost. You can also remove the inlet duct, when it is cool, and check for axial and radial play in the impeller.
Yes, they can be serviced, see the tech folder. New turbos are going to be over $1000.
Are their better after market turbos out their or is the stock turbo the best way to go.
That depends on what you want to do.
The OEM turbo is a Garrett which is a good turbo if you take care of it. ie oil & filter changes, don't shut the engine down until it's cooled after running hard, etc.
If you plan on adding more fuel (more HP) you may need a larger turbo.
What do you want to do and how much money do you want to spend?
