i got a 91 f150 im lookin to drop a 6bt into it would like to know if anyone have any tips to make it easier for me or which combo of transmission and transfer case would be good for a daily driver but be able to pull a buddy out when need or pull a 7000lb truck and trailer. oh and pics would be greatly appreciated. thanks
The engine could handle the weight, the right transmission can handle it. However, I am not too sure pulling 7000# with an F-150 is safe....
well im careful when i tow but i been pullin the same truck and trailer for 4 years now with my stock 5.0L and aod transmission. although i use to dog it when i first got it but i calmed down and i cant handle the 8mpg and my motor has almost 400k. so you have any idea what a good transmission would be a good combo?
Well, I was looking into the swap for my MPG consumption also. I have a C6 and thats what I would keep. Its a heavy duty trans thatll hold up and its already mated to my transfer case. An adapter plate would be necessary, obviously.
An NV4500 is the 5 speed that came behind the 6bt in the dodge trucks and the NV5600 is the 6 Speed that came behind it in the same trucks. until the G56 came sometime around 2004-2005. You can use the Diesel / Big Block ZF 5 if you use an adapter plate. Destroked makes one. You can find the NV4500 in both GM and Dodge versions. Any of these trannies will be what you want, as long as you want a stick. IF you want any auto, well.... then I just cant talk to you cause we speak different languages.

well i got the aod which is an automatic but i do want manual. and the nv4500 will bolt right up to the 6bt? and is it around the same size as the ZF 5?
An NV4500 will probably be more expensive than a ZF5, as they are "more desired" as far as whoever is concerned. Point is, they usually bring in more money. The Dodge NV4500 will bolt right to the cummins just like they did on the assembly line, if you found an NV4500 that was already stuck to the dodge 241 Tcase, which is driver side drop, then that would be a simple deal, if not I am not sure if you can use the BW Tcase or not, dont know about adapters for that. If you use the ZF then you will have to buy an adapter plate to mate it to the cummins. But on the plus side, the ZF will bolt to your BW1356 t-case. The money you save on a ZF you will probably spend on the adapter plate. Its kind of a" six of one" scenario. Maybe some other guys have some more or better input.
Dimensionally I cant tell you exactly how different they are, but they should be within reason. I have a ZF sitting on my garage floor and I have an NV4500 in my dodge, if it wasnt pitch black and cold outside I would go pull a tape measure on the both of them. Maybe when its daylight.
I would not do this swap unless you were planning on boxing the front half of the frame to make it more able to handle the twisting torque and weight of the Cummins. Not to mention you will need to go to a better front end, I would suggest a D60 out of a F350 of similar year, and the matching 10.25 rear out of a similar year F250hd or F350. Then you are going to also need to get drive shafts and new transfercase yokes to match the new larger yokes on the axles. I would have at least $10k in reserve for this swap all things considered. Unless you have amazing junk yard skills and are willing to run unmodified parts.
