Another 4wd problem...
Last night with first snow I attempted to use the 4wd. The dash light came on, but no 4wd. Then I started getting 4wd intermittently. It would 'clunk' in and then slip out immediately... so basically unuseable. I tried high and low range and its the same deal.
Where do I start looking???
Thanks
This sounds like a hub problem... dis-engage the hubs and try to rotate the axles by turning the knuckles by hand. They should rotate freely. Then engage the hubs and try to rotate the axles again. You should not be able to rotate them (or after a rotation or two they should "clunk" in place and then you should not be able to rotate them). If it doesnt lock the axle, then there is something wrong with the hub.
Pull the bad one out and clean and lube it. Actually do both of them for good measure... It sounds like one of them is only slightly engaging. Maybe water got inside one somehow and frose it up or whatever.
If that doesn't help, then report back...
Thanks for the response
They use a relatively weak spring to engage the splines... if there is some grit or ice in there it can prevent the splines from fully engaging. It is a quick, easy and cheap test anyway.
Does your 4x4 light stay on while it is "clunking" in and out?
To be honest, with the way everyone on this site raves about Warns, I really didn't even consider them as the issue. I even have the high-dollar lifetime warantee grade hubs.
Who'd-a-thunk-it?
