You should be able to remove the screws that attach the EGR to the upper intake then pull on it a bit so you can slide some aluminum in there. Then button it back up for testing purposes.

As far as codes go it would not be a bad idea to check/clean the grounds on the fender, radiator support and block. Typically you would get a lot more issues, but it never hurts to check.

hmm theres more going on than EGR problems which is what I was afraid of,I tried the aluminum can between the EGR and intake and it made not appreciable difference in running condition I mean it ran a tiny bit better but not enough for that to have been the primary problem. now I'm thinking Fuel Pressure either the Regulator or the Fuel Pump it'self.
