Need paint help

I need some advice on repairing a dent. I have done bodywork and painting before, but it has been many years. I do have all the required equipment.
I plan to sand, fill and prime as usual.

Need some advice (techniques) on:
Applying the base coat and feathering it in.
Sanding.
Applying the clear coat and feathering.

Also, is it ok to use rattle can primer?
What about base and clear coat paint recommendations?

Thanks!

Where is the dent? Since you say you have the sand and fill part down then I would use some coats of 2K urethane primer. Block that level with 220, then finish block sanding past your repair area with 600. Then sand the entire panel with 800. Base your repair area fading into the repair area a little further with each coat. Finish with clear over the whole panel.

Rattle can primer I would never use when painting a car. Paint recommendations can be varied depending on what people are familiar with. I use PPG Concept SS to duplicate the factory look. If I did bc/cc on the one car I have that could use it I would probably use PPG's line as the car is dark blue and their Omni line may have coverage problems with that color. Then there is also what suppliers are available to you.

It is on the side of the bed above the rear wheel. Could not post a pic but I did here: Need paint help - Powerstroke Nation.

I have several good body shop suppliers here. Just looking for advice on materials to use and the technique on feathering in.

On a recent repair on my own vehcile, i did use rattlecan primer but it was from the auto paint supplier, 2K with hardner and I am pleased with the results.

Since i didn't see you were in Southern California that will change things. Color is now water borne while clear is still solvent based. I have never used water borne and have no intention of doing so. When I need paint I'll just take a 3 hour drive to Reno and get all the solvent based single stage or base I want from PPG there. I'm sure water borne can be used in place of solvent base as described above. Since there is no catalyst in it there should be no problems with the old base color. Yet you may need a different gun to use it. You need to get the repair dried out quickly like in a few minutes with moving air over the panel. Or you could drive to Las Vegas if close enough like Reno is for me. As for blending base, as was mentioned, you can spray the repair area and then some. Then you could thin the base with some reducer and blend out a little further and maybe do it one more time. There is no blending of the clear because you need to clear the whole panel for it not to be seen.

Hmm. I was afraid of something like this.

I would just as soon go to NV or AZ and get some solvent based paint if that is best. Need some for touch-up nicks. Hell, I drove to Carson City just to buy the truck.
Perhaps the best thing is to get the paint, do the prep and get someone else to finish it. I used to paint motorcycles, helmets, etc. Lacquer and acrylic enamel, but things have changed since those days.

This is the only dent on the truck and to make it worse, it happened at a drive-thru burger place..

Thank you all for your help.

Merry Christmas!

Just so you know , that will be a difficult color to match . It may well be worth letting a pro do the paint work ...

Thank you, that's the direction I will be going. That is the only dent I have.
Got a few little nicks and scraps here and there but I can live with that.
