The first year of halogen headlamps as standard equipment was 1981.
The standard wiring and switches on the 1980 and earlier trucks are not equipped to handle the extra power of the halogen headlamps. This could lead to overheated wiring, premature switch wear, and circut breaker triggering. (Blinking lights)
If you are going to put halogen or brighter lights than the factory installed standard incandecent headlamps, then I would strongly recommend the Brighter brights, whiter whites upgrade on any 1980 and earlier. 1981 and newer it's not as crucial, as there was switch and wiring upgrades to take the extra load of the halogen headlamps, but it can still make a difference even on these.
Above all, if you don't do the upgrade, (I highly recommend it though) clean the grounds to the headlamps. There should be a ground wire eyelit on either fender, or the radiator support for the front lights.
