Okay well within the next year we will have adapters for the IDI engines. There is a company in SoCal that is trying to make them. I have been waiting for this for a while now!!With the adapter you will be able to run 385 series gas engine transmissions or an AOD with another adapter you will be able to run a GM 4l80E tranny. The prices are going to be up there around 900.00 starting out. I will let you guys know when I can get my hands on one as I plan on putting a GM 4l80E in mine. According to them you will be able to reuse the flywheel with the torque converter adapter.
One advantage the 4L80 has is the option for a vacuum modulator control. Although once you price everything out, its still hard to justify compared to a well build E4OD.
Think I've seen adapter plates for cummins conversions in the $1200 range so I guess $900 isn't all that bad relatively speaking.
A Ford AOD behind an IDI? Holy crap, that will murder it!
A stock AOD would be OK, it did well behind the 5.0 mustangs. Hell, I had a shift kit, a converter and with my car on low boost it held fine for a while lol Then it blew to pieces. I swapped in a built AOD and it handled the abuse weekend after weekend, plus driving on the street's. My car has dyno'd 488whp/503wtq on 13psi.
The AOD can be built up for some high torque capacity but I would be more concerned about the gear spread issue. Even behind a 302, the gap from 2-3 and 3-4 can be a bit of a stretch. Even under mild acceleration, we are talking a 1000 RPM gap.
My F150 does ok with the pedal all the way down but any less and falls on its face into 3rd.
Going with the AODE offers you the option to unlock the torque converter to help bridge those gaps, but those ones need a computer so by the time you have the adapter plate, computer and built up transmission, you are better off with an E4OD (or 5 speed).
Having said all that, I would still like to see it done with an AOD simply because its a much cheaper and simpler transmission with a wider overdrive ratio than the 4L80 or the E4OD. Wouldn't put it in a tow rig, but maybe a half ton diesel bomber would be nice as a cruiser or weekend toy hauler.
Ever see a planetary gearset from an AOD? It makes the C6 planet look like toy in comparison. Its the same basic gearset used in the FMX, and 4R70W and weighs like 10 pounds . AOD can be made to handle some serious power well within the C6 capabilities and with OD.
