has anyone pluged the hole in the back of the vally that leads into bellhousing ,i have had two clutch baths oil and fuel ?since i got it accessible now it would be a good time . also ithought about extending the hole with a tube above the hieght of the manifold. if i needed it to vent. any ideas? its along way to the clutch in 4x4 wes
How about making a drain tube instead. You could get a piece of Tygon tubing that will fit in the hole. Route it down the back of the block, and out the bottom. It would still allow a drain path and wouldn't kill a clutch. Just do a fillet seal of high temp RTV around the tubing at the hole.
You want that drain to remain there, otherwise you'll end up with a huge puddle between the cylinder heads.
Extending the drain with a tube is a great idea, but it would be much better to fix the source of the leak.

ken, thanks if i had the trans out i would do something like that i have the top of the motor clear and have access to vally good right now just thinkin prevenitive maint . dont want to have to take trans & transfer case agian any time soon! wes

thanks dan no leaks now thank god ! just have the top of the vally clear and trying to come up with a better idea have had to in the past pull trans twice to clean once and change once clutch disk . no fun once for fuel lever oring and once for hpop line oring . wes

Understood.
I still like the idea of a drain tube.
I started another thread without even looking at the list... I promise, I WILL be doing something different while my engine is out. Pics to come!
We'd all like to fix our leaks the moment they happen - but it only takes a little oil/fuel to contaminate a clutch. I have lost 2 gals of oil a couple times before I knew there was a problem... This was a stupid design flaw IMO. In the 220k miles I've had this truck, I have enough experience to know that sooner or later the damn things gonna leak something again...
if motor is out it makes since to run a tube of some sort down the back of motor / bell housing to help because some day it will leak agian and at least you dont need to pull trans no fun in my 4x4 . i think for now i will still try something to stop from going in bellhousing. im thinking extending up to a level above the manifold.mabey an epoxed short tube ? wes
I am pretty sure there is enough meat there to support a NPT pipe thread. If I ever decided to do it, I would thread it an insert a 90 degree fitting to route it down to below and out the bottom. Depending on the access I would use Tygon tubing or hard-line bent to follow the contours better.
Once installed you could always shoot air through it to keep it cleaned out.
Wes, this is not a 'vent' its just the drain for the valley. Stick a piece of cork in it and be done. The only worry I have about that is submerging wires, sensors, etc in the valley in HOT oil or fuel.

thanks guys for input, jason i agree
you know ive been thinking that in my 30 years of building cars and trucks i have never seen a bellhousing that had a hole on the top ! only a access cover on bottom . ford / chevy / dodge / every other trans ive worked on! i just looked at this agian this morning the level would be very low, below turbo pedestal bolts no wires or sensers just fuel lines and oil lines would be lower . the back of the manifold is steped down in the back . i guess you could have about a 3 in in vally worst case . im gonna plug it!!
