I plan to build a 410 from either a 360 or 390. I have heard I will need a 428 crankshaft kit, but I would like to know what else. What pistons to buy? What camshaft? What aluminumcylinder heads? I want the right combinations. I am also sure the balance will be different on my flexplate (C6 trans) and harmonic balancer. I have heard these motors are externally balanced. I am on a limited budget, but of course I want the most hp for my money, and still be able to run on pump gas (therefore relatively low compression). Thanks in advance for any help...

hack, The 360/390 is the same bore block. The 428 crank calls for the different flexplate, so those 2 are a given.
We have some good engine builders here that can help you a lot. First off, what kind of budget do you have to work with. Knowing that they can help you speck your engine.
Just saying, if $2500.00 is all you have to spend, there is no need talking about a $5000.00 build. You have mentioned so expensive parts so far.
Agree with John. If you give us a dollar figure we can help you put a combination together that will be very powerful. You're in the right place, just don't start buying parts and throwing them on or you could end up with a nice looking motor that sounds great but won't beat itself in a race...
FYI the new 3.98 crank from eagle was set up for exterior balance but now is set up for internal balance. Think about that before you buy a used one for at least 300 bucks that is 40 years old that is set for external balance. The new one from eagle is I think 525.
I guess what I need is a parts list of the items I would need to buy so I can figure out what it will cost me. I have a complete motor now, but I know I need a 428 crankshaft, pistons, aluminum cylinder heads, an intake, a carburetor, a flexplate, of course machine work on the bottom end, probably a little head work, ect. What I need to know is which ones to buy so I will have the right set up for the least amount of money. I just want the most hp for my buck, and the right setup...
Edelbrock makes a good set of aluminum heads for the fe. We have a set fully ported and they are great. Not too bad out of the box for starters though. Matching dual plane intake for the street would be fine. Not a lot of companies make 410 pistons, they won't be cheap but that's the way it goes with the fe. Google 410 ford pistons and you'll find some. Probably 4-500 bucks. Street carb, I'd go 750 cfm holley or demon.
Heads: 1500
intake: 300
crank: 525
pistons: 500
carb: 350
cam, lifters, springs, timing set: 350 for flat tappet 1000 for roller
roller rockers: 350
flexplate: 100
machine work: 3-500+ depending what all needs done
bearings, rings: 150
gaskets : 100
other misc. items: 2-300
head work: extra
intake work: extra
headers: 300
exhaust: 250
As far as getting a cam, you're best to call a company like comp cams and tell them what you have for a motor, vehicle, gears, etc. They will ask lots of questions to match the cam to the application for you.
The Edelbrock aluminum cylinder heads will really wake-up your motor with a good set of headers. I have the Edelbrock heads on my 390 and it can really move down the road. Also, get a good set of cylinder head bolts, but with the aluminum heads you can't use the stainless steel bolts in combination with the aluminum. Stainless steel and aluminum are a bad mix and can cause corrison. I went with the black oxide head bolts from ARP and have no problems.

Damn so I should be replacing my stainless intake manifold, and exhaust manifold bolts soon then huh?!?
Oh and valve cover bolts!!!
Thanks for the information! I had been told it would be cheapest to build a 410 from a 360 or 390, but it sounds like a stroker is a stroker for the most part. I guess I will save up to build the 445 I had originally intended to build, since it doesn't seem like I will be saving much. Anybody with any savings ideas, while still making 400 plus hp are certainly always welcome...
