Unhappy backfiring

I had an original 352 that came in a 62 mercury monterey. I turned it into a 390. Every part on the engine is brand new. I bought an Accel breakerless electronic distributor for it. Anyways, I jumped in the car took off down the street and my car shut off.
I tow it home to find out that the wiring inside the distributor wasnt bundled properly and got shredded by the rotor. Two months have gone by and I just installed the new distributor, keep in mind nothing else has been changed. No matter where I time it, I get awful backfires through the carburator. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

to me it sounds like you timing is 180* out ..that means it is at tdc on the exhaust stroke . I would take alook at the damper and see if the timing marks match up at all..give that a try

If it won't pull itself down the road then it is prolly 180 like chas said. If it backfires when you try to accelerate then it is just retarded timing.

I'd double check your firing order on the dist cap. And, set the crank at TDC, and check where the rotor is pointing... Static timing for a base. It is too easy to get the plug wires criss-crossed, especially when leaning over the radiator. It won't run if 180 off, but could be off by a tooth when you dropped the dist in.

I just wanted to thank everyone for their help. the timing was 180 out. Maybe next time I'll pay a little more attention.
