Electrical Gremlins! Help!

I drive a E-450 cut-away bus. Recently while driving at night the dash lights went out except for the two turn signals and high beam lights indicator. They came on. Once in awhile I can hit the top of the dash and all is fine, but usually they stay off. Last night I noticed that while it was running all of my gauges were not working and the transmission wasn't shifting right, but suddenly everything starting working! If you have any idea what this is please give me some direction, thank you!

Have the charging system checked.
Transmission shifting is electrically controlled.
My 650 showed that it was charging at 14V but the alternator had failed.
