The timing is fine and all the plugs and rotor and cap has been changed. The backfire I think was caused by either bad gas or something going on with the TPS. After I finally got it started now it has a loud tap on top of the motor.
I think I got all the old gas out. Truck runs good but now i am worried about the loud tap. i am going to have to pull the valve covers off to see if something is bent.
That sucks. Umm... yo do that and report back here. My engine has a slight knock due to loss of oil psi. Gotta get that worked out soon.
But why would something bend? Was the tap there before? Maybe the engine never backfired lol maybe if was something else.
Yeah pull the valve covers & have a look , if its poping though the intake thats a good sign you have a problem with an intake valve , the noise and back fireing are probably the same problem...Lew
Got the motor from a junk yard but have been driving it before this happened. Motor sounded and ran great. It is suppose to have on 35000 mile on it total.
After you replace the push rods spin it over a few times before you put the covers back on , and see if they look ok , all the valves should be the same height when the valves are closed...
I suppose you don't run it hard. You never mentioned if it's a 302 (5.0)or a 351 (5.8). Wait so if you were running it then how did you get bad gas in your tank? The most reasonable way as lew52 said is that it was sitting for quite some time.
hey lew52 have you ever removed the oil pan to change out the oil intake screen and oil pump on these 92-96 f150's? It's time for me to make a move soon cause my engine is starting to develop a slight knock. I have inspected valves, pushrods, and rockers. They all seem fine. See it stops knocking over 1,000RPM when it gets pressure back up but idling is where it already got annoying. *tap tap tap
