If you have tilt steering, it's VERY easy. Under the key socket is a hole. You'll need to turn the key to the on position and press a small diameter drill bit in the hole, depressing the lock, then pull the assembly out. It goes in the same way.

actually if there is a shroud over the steering column you can replace the key without removing the steering wheel. THe inside of the gear on the column (farthest inside) was packed full of metal from previous key cylinder(s)wearing out. Took a dremel and began grinding the inside of the gear so the the end of cylinder key would fit, when a molded peice of thrash metal popped out, it was perfectly formed to the inside of the gear leaving the slot unaccessible . After that the key was easy. Also the bracket before the gear goes tooth in and is a pain in the ****. Hope this helps anyone in the future. Will post when I do 96 f-150 tilt wheel
