My friend has a 87' ranger that has the 2.0 I believe with a 5 speed. The other day his clutch quit working so being as he isn't very mechanically inclined, I looked at it for him. Here the firewall was rusted out where the clutch rod pushes into the little cylinder, leaving that whole mounting plate move resulting in no clutch disengagement. I knew that the 80's full size trucks were noted for this happening. Where the rangers also noted for this? Does anyone have any suggestions on an easy fix? I was just going to weld some steel around the outer perimeter to keep it attatched to the firewall. Thanks for any help.
the fire wall rusted out on my 84, we determined it to be from the felt that was used as insulation for the cab. Water was getting under the plastic cover into the felt insulation and sitting there rusting out the fire wall. Just my 2 cents, you can pick up a firewall aftermarket pretty cheap and weld or rivet it into place after cutting out the rust on the other one.
Thanks for the input, I appreciate it. but I fixed the problem by welding a brace from the mounting plate for the clutch cylinder to the inner fender well, surpisingly it works great!
