We have a 1979 F 350 with the 400 V8. We got a good deal because the engine had a small fire around the carb which melted all the hoses and wires. The engine is running again, but not as smooth as it should. There is a metal can the shape of ice cream cone about 2" in diameter that looks as if it needs a vacuum hose attached to it. What does it attach to? Also, there are a couple of vacuum tips on the carb - - where do they attach. And finally, is it worthwhile to upgrade the distributor, coil, plugs & wires to MSD & E3 aftermarkets? Thanks for the great forum!!
Distributor vacuum comes from the port on the passenger side of the carb. When I hooked mine up it pinged so now it stays off. You can back off the vacuum advance with a small allen wrench through the vacuum advance port on the dizzy(counter clockwise). It wasn't enough in my case and I suspect that's why they are always unplugged.
I like the duraspark ignition and have heard it is very reliable. I carry a spare ignition module just in case but have heard if it quits you can let it cool down and then it will work again to get you to the parts store. I also carry a spare dizzy and coil but that might be overkill. I ride a 30 year old Harley where you often need spare parts with you and it has rubbed off with the old Ford too.
