I tell you what guys. I didn't know squat about a diesel until i found this site,, and I still dont' know much but since i'm still learning, i try to listen to the advice you guys offer. I was told to use 5w 40 for my last oil change. Well, against the locals advice, (part stores, inlaws, etc) I went with yalls good word and used it. Its never super cold here, maybe in the high teens at night but the truck use to rattle and clank when starting on a cold morning. Now even tho I kinda liked the rattle before, now the truck starts quicker and hardly no rattle at all. I'm saying its the oil difference. I really like it. The only problem is no more diesel rattle for me to here but its got to be better for it. Thanks you guys, this is an awesome site. I want to thank all that has helped me in the past. I truely wish everyone here on this site a very merry xmas and hope that everyone's family is well. thanks. Herb
That's nice of you to report. I was slow to go with the 5W also, and I am careful not to believe everything I read here. But once I tried it, the 5W made an instantly dramatic change in how my truck starts in the cold and high elevations.
I have to agree also on the 5w40. I have noticed a huge difference in the cold. Though I live in Fl I travel often to cold places and the truck runs great when freezing.
5W-40 is the best of both worlds... low temp flow-ability and protection and high temp protection.. so no matter where one lives, you can use it year-round (which I do here in Kansas City).
I personally do not switch between brands and grades... so I personally use Rotella-Syn 5W-40 (which I buy at Walmart for $19.00/gallon). I have found it to be as good as any other, easily purchased and reasonably priced... and since I change my oil every 5,000 miles, keeping the costs down is key for me.
Even though one drains and adds back 15qts of oil when doing an oil change, our systems actually hold a totaly capacity close to 18qts (3qts or so stay in the high-pressure oil system and rails).
This is why I am not a big believer in changing brands and grades due to the mixing of 3qts of old oil with the 15 fresh new quarts... no way around it... but at least I am using the same brand and grade year-round on a consistent basis.
Personally, I do not believe that any harm will come if one does mix and none have been reported... but that is just how I think and view my oil usage and oil changes.
