Question efi to carb question

Ok im new to this sight but everyone here seems pretty sharp!! So heres the deal i have a 86 full size bronco 302efi auto 4x4. New from the machine shop .030 over short block. And brand new edelbrock performer rpm inake, performer rpm aluminum heads, performer rpm cam, with the recommended edelbrock 1804 (i think) carb. new mallory (one wire hot) dist. My question is with factory fuel system which i believe is going to put out about 40psi, which is to much ,can i install a electric fuel pump to the already existing fuel line and will it pull the fuel through the pump that is in the tank. Does the existing fuel system have two pumps or one and if it has two is one of those low pressure and if the one in the tank is low pressure can i just use that one? any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance!!!

I believe this truck has a low pressure/high volume in-tank pump and a second high pressure pump on the frame, but this was the first year for EFI so that's not a certainty you'll have to check it out for yourself.
If you do have that setup then all you need to do is remove the high pressure pump and install a bypass regulator at the carb, the in-tank pumps do not have a built-in bypass and provide a steady output volume that is way more fuel than the carb can use.. hence the need for the bypass regulator to return the extra to the tank.

I am in the process of doing the same to a 1985 bronco w/351. I have the in tank lift pump and high pressure pump on the frame rail. Is there a difference between a pressure regulator and a bypass regulator? And if so can I make the regulator work by putting a tee fitting on for a return line to tank? My reason for asking is I have a pressure regulator.

The diffrence is the bypass reg sends the unused fuel and psi back to tank and the pressure regulator will keep the psi behind the regulator I decided not to use a regulator for the simple fact if the regulator fails you would have 40 psi going to the carb which is rated to 5 to 7 psi so I am putting a inline electric pump and doin away with the intank pump. Hope this helps you out

I think I will go the route you are going as well. Is it the low pressure pump (3-7)psi and do you still need a return line? NAPA quoted around $40.00 for this. I was trying to use what I had because I already had the regulator. I went with the HEI style distributor to eliminate buying ignition box and coil. Was $48.00 incl shipping on ebay.

No u don't need I return line with that pump. Hook up straight to the carb will work great. Iwent with same dist on my stang and they work great just make sure u have a good 12 volt source some vehiicles have a resistor in line to cut the volts back so make sure it is 12 volts all the time when the key is on! I also am using the same dist on my bronco u just can't beat the price and reliability has been wonderful
