electric fuel questions

I've been reading lots of threads on electric fuel and about have my heart set on doing it when I put this motor I'm rebuilding in. I really like the idea of cleaning up the top of the engine mostly. The last leak I got up there cost me a clutch and this would almost eliminate that problem.
I really like what one guy on another forum did using cat filters. I think the only thing I will do different is to use aeroquip 2807 hose. It's easy to work with and will not come apart.
Since most of these home built electric fuel systems use a lot of Ford or big truck parts I don't think any of it will be hard to get if I break down in the middle of nowhere but to make it most reliable what have some of you done? Any tips or tricks to it that you have learned?

Sounds like you are really doing this right RRranch. That's one thing I'd like to do too is clean up the valley with elec. fuel. A good leak is what it will probably take me to get motivated to spend the money to do it. Good luck with your rebuild and everything else you're doing.

There are two good threads on PSN, my plan is to make a hybrid of those two systems when I do mine. Now I just need money, parts, and time!

It's not all that difficult really. Be careful with the fitting on the back of the driver side head when you pull it out for a different fitting, Mine snapped off inside the head, but an easy out got it out no problem. Just build you a mounting plate for the filter heads and mount an electric SD pump between the 2 filters. Obviously b/c I have the CPR system mine has a 2 micron pre pump and 100 micron post pump. I like it that way to keep all the trash out of the pump.

I figure the stock fuel filter is 14 microns or so, a 10 or 15 micron pre-pump filter is plenty good enough, then 2 micron final filtration. I never understood the logic with the CPR and the higher micron rating filter post pump... nothing past 2 microns is going through the pump so anything over a 2 micron filter post-pump just seems silly to me but what do I know
I looked into the AirdogII but I didn't care for the expense. If it was $100-150 less I'd be giving it serious thought. This reminds me... when I go home for Christmas I should hit the yard down there and see if I can come up with an SD fuel pump and some wiring parts for this task.

stupid question chase but would it be for the reason of flow restriction right after the pump?

I'd have to say no, but I'm sure Bob had a good reason for designing his system the way he did. Bean's fuel system is 150 prefilter and 5 micron final. I know of several builds online and a few people I've personally met using 10 micron pre-pumps and 2 micron post pumps and no known issues.

I'm not in for yet another fuel system arguement, but I did find a little bit of residue in the 100 micron screen last time I cleaned it.. Why does the stock fuel system have screens all around the FPR? Thats all the 100 micron filter is, is a screen.. I would say it is for better flow after the pump and just in case the pump throws something out of it, the screen will catch it.. It's not like we ever see a pump explode, but just in case never hurts. I've often wondered why you need 2 filters in the system when 1 does the job... No need for 2 really fine filters(10 and 2) IMO..

I'm not trying to start a war Travis, just throwing out more info. There's always more than one way to skin a cat... each of us needs to pick our own poison and go with whatever we feel is best.

I'm not saying one way is better than the other either. I like one fine filter and a screen after the pump just in case and for better flow after the pump, but everyone likes different stuff.

That's what it all boils down to... personal preference. Just like why some guys are happy with a D66 and stage one's and some guys want B-codes and twin turbos.

Ill be doing my electric fuel setup next week. all my parts got ordered last night.... should have less than 450 bucks in it.

Problem is the filter bases... WIX who makes the napa ones and the fleet gaurd and all of the popular ones are out of stock and wont be making them for a while... so you gotta buy a baldwin FB1311 base and mount it differently.

Hey guys. Sorry to jump in. But are there any threads that can guide a novice on how to install an electric fuel pump system and what to buy?
