Bed swap?
That's exactly it. The F-250 frame is f/ the long bed. I got a 1/2 ton step side bed in great condition a number of years back, bought the whole truck('58 Custom Cab) f/ next to nothing. Wanted to use the bed, but unless I put some type of filler inbetween the cab and the bed, like sheet meatal panels that smoothly transitioned the cab and bed into one another, (need to be made by hand) you have that big gap and it looks "wack." In my opinion, the best way to go is with a "fleetside" bed, a long bed, forget the short bed w/ the frame you have, and the truck will look great like that. There aren't many Fleetside long beds around and you'll have a rare set-up. I've had my truck f/ 24 plus years now, and I've done more than my share of studying and researching just about everything and anything one can do w/ that truck. I have reversed eye main leafs on it which dropped in quite abit, removed the many leafs, from 13 in the rear and 9 in the front, plus the helpers both front and back, (mine had the 1 ton suspension) and went to 4 in the rear and 3 in the front. It rides smooth and still stable and has some firmness to it. I'm now in the process of installing a '71 Olds 455ci engine in the truck. I'm selling the original 223ci engine, still has the standard bore and standard bearings, never bored/never turned the crank. Engine is complete. I wanted something different, not another small block Chevy, so I went w/ the Olds. I've had a Ford 9" rear in it since I got rid of the 8 lug hubs and original Dana rear, in the late '80s. My truck is completely rust-free, and I'm the 4th owner; Uncle Sam bought it new, it was an Army engineer truck, Old Walt, who had Walt's Texaco here in Killeen on 8th. Street, bought it at the auction on Ft. Hood, then Jim Sharp, a masonry Contractor here in Killeen bought it from his old friend, Walt, and when I worked f/ Jim Sharp, I saw the truck in his equipment yard, asked him what it was doing there, he told me the steering box went out on it, I offered him $200.00 f/ the truck which he accepted, and had him take it out of my pay the following week. I brought it home, installed a steering box, got it registered and started driving it. A great truck. I now have a Toyota power steering box in it, along w/ a Toyota tilt steering column. Any other questions you have in ref. to the old trucks like our's, just give me a yell. My e-mail address is: jhfctx@yahoo.com
