Not really pressing Need to Know stuff but just wondering. I have a 428 with a C6 and 3:73 gears in the rear ( DANA 60 ) 72 F250.
What is the area of top speed at red line?
I find her straining pretty good at 85 mph. I don't have a tach and I don't think I'm really pushing red line but 85 seems kin of slow for how much noise the engine is making?
Yeah thats just in theory. 100 is scary in my 71 Mustang, funny thing is,
with the 2.50 to 1 gear ratio, and all the torque, my plan is to race the standing mile, and/or run it at El Mirage dry lakes...We'll see.
I hope you are tongue in cheek John. If not the award goes to you! LOL.
Like I said, bored and curious. Not stupid and young!
I don't want to go any faster than 85 really. Like the consensus, it is a truck after all and an old one at that.
Just thinking back to my 66' SS 396 Chevelle. It had an auto tranny with 4:11 in the rear and it would do a 110 before getting close to redline. Of course it was screamig too if I remember correctly but it still had what felt like plenty of pull.
Besides, it is nice to know what you can get out of it.
I'll check out that calculator. Thanks guys...I think.
No sir, no joke, I am as serious as a heart attack. Next time you are out on the big road and traffic is flowing, mash the gas and hold on.
Out on 540 Raleigh NC it is easy to find traffic flowing around 85 mph some days. I love to get in that flow and run my old truck up to a hundred, let off, run it up again. I love the notes from the FE through the headers & turbo exhaust.
The smiles and thumbs up that I get from others is cool too.
haha used to have a 79 caddy stock 425 it would burry the needle at half gas pedal travel.
loved it in the rain 200,000 miles on kirkland costco tires *bald* no break booster no windshield wipers *i think they gave it an extra 20 hp * loved it in the rain.
my truck toped at 85 was scared even then 0.0
I was bored too. With 4.56 gears, 33" tires and a 4 speed: to do 100mph my 428 would be turning 4643!!!!
At 65 mph I'm turning around 3000, which is pretty darn busy for that old motor, and noisy for the driver. I've gone faster in that truck, but not very often...
Don't even think about fuel economy at those speeds...
Dino likes 55mph -- 2550 rpm. He'll get there when he's da**-well ready. All those 'streak of lightning cars' may get there faster, but he'll look better getting there.
Darrell, Why do you run a combo like that? That would have to be a race setup to run that huge motor and gear combo.
How do you afford to drive it? It can't get more than 5 mpg.
My 55mph is at 2050 rpms, 3000 is about 82 mph.
John
Yeah, it is a funny setup. However, the truck came from the factory with 4.56 gears and a 352. Some one transplanted the 428 years ago. In 4x4 lo-range I can walk faster than the truck can go! I use 4x4 a bit, so it would mean transplanting both gear sets...
I get 10 - 12 mpg highway, about the same in the city. With my construction trailer attached (14 foot, 5500lbs), I still get 9 to 10 mpg.
Now bear in mind that an imperial gallon is a bit bigger than a US gallon, so my numbers would be a bit lower in the states.
Living and working in a small town with very little highway driving, I don't much notice the lack of top speed.
I do appreciate that when I'm hitched up and sitting at a stop sign at the bottom of a 12% grade (common around here) that I can come off the line without burning the clutch out, and work through the gears up to speed without brutalizing the drive train.
'There's no replacement for displacement' [and gearing!]
I'm counting on lots of people driving prius's and smart cars to make up for my environmental impact...
