its a 360, today i was driving got around the corner and it just would not get any gas, id keep pressing the pedal and but nothing, every now and then it would rev but it would end up turing off. ended up having to push it back home. When it died i waited a while to start it and every now and then it would fire up id have my foot down on the gas and it would rev up then die. sound like a fuel pump?
Possibilty. Check/change fuel filter, test pressure if you have a gauge. You can look in throat of carb and see if fuel is squirting. Still could be the needle valve sticking on the carb float. Remove line from carb and carefully check to see if fuel is getting that far. That'll narrow it down a bit for you.
ok so i took the hose off of the fuel filter and the gas started flowing steady, and the fuel filter looked clean as well. Im pretty sure im getting gas to the carb too, because when i was trying to start it and keep pressing the pedal, i was smelling gas.
Check your oil level and smell the dipstick for gas. If the diaphragm in the fuel pump is going bad, it can leak into the timing chain cover and dilute the oil which means the oil doesn't really lubricate anything. Bad News.
Good! Progress. Now look down throat of carb and move throttle linkage. You should see fuel squirt into the primaries as soon as throttle is moved. If not, carb is next, if getting fuel, time to look for ignition problems.
Parts look fairly new. Trouble shooting electrical problems over the internet is a crap shoot at best if they are intermittent. Could be coil, coil wire, loose connections, (even back to ignition switch) condenser(silver thing under the distributor cap) shorting out. Just cutting off completly and getting fuel still leads me to losing spark for some reason, good luck.
Check your points before you go spending dough. Them worthless points will just pop out of adjustment for the heck of it sometimes. It's why I put in a Pertronix and haven't had to deal with it for years now and this beast is my daily driver.
