Let's talk about radar dectectors.

Ok so it has been probably 5-7 years since my last radar dector was really relivant. I remember as a kid that detecting radar(etc) was fairly easy. A few years back troopers moved to a instant on radar which made detection a lot less precise and more risky. I'm not planning on driving 100mph everywhere but having a little buffer when driving would be nice. What do you guys use? How well do they work?

Waste of Money, Use rabbits to lead the way. Cop sees you estimates your speed fires the radar at you. All it did for you was tell you that you just got caught.

There are several good ones out there. I'm sure you can find reviews on them somewhere. I have a Cobra and an Escort(can't remember model numbers). They are worth their weight in gold. The only thing that they can't do is detect a cop with his radar off, and then you drive right up on the cop, he hits you with radar, and you are nailed. But if there is a cop sitting somewhere up ahead with his radar on, or even on and off, you will get some warning. Even cops driving in the opposite direction can be detected. My radar detectors have saved me tons of money over the years. If you do a lot of driving, you have to have one. Unless you are one of those people who drives the speed limit. But if you were, you wouldn't of started this thread. Good luck.

That's if you don't know how to use a radar detector. If you use it like you describe, yes, you will always lose. A "properly" used radar detector means that you are detecting radar/laser beams going past the vehicles far enough in front of you that the cop is not yet looking at you.

Personally, I'm not in that much of a hurry. And, in the rare case that I have been (in the past, of course--distant past), I may have used a rabbit or two.

A radar dectector is a early warning device. But it does nothing for you if there are 2 cars on the road and the cop is the other one waiting on you. From my reasearch today after work the technology is getting to the point where a cop can detect you speed traveling the same direction, determine the rabbits speed as well as your speed behind him. a good dectector is about 3x what I was wanting to spend. I was un aware of all the cool stuff though. A radar dectector is not really good enough anymore. Laser is also a serious player. But a radar dectector/ lazer dectector is not much help. Jamming laser though is legal and effective way to lower your risks in tx anyway. That alone is as much as a good dectector.

Learn to use the cruise control....Then you'll NEVER be caught speeding.....

Of course that relies on you paying attention to the current speed limit.....

I once ran over the speed limit everywhere, this was before the price of gas wasnt my only issue. But what I found was neat, running with a garmin GPS, and speeding, or doing the normal speed, really didnt buy me that much of a time savings. Especially when I have kids and a wife in the car.. we are stopping every 2 1/2 hours anyway.

And here in the city, it just lets me hit the brakes quicker for he next stop light..Now, running to Florida, or California, maybe I would look into them again, but now a days, it wouldnt do anything for me..

Depending on where I go the time saving can be pretty substantial. I can shave 30mins to 1.5hrs. I agree on short trips though.

In my most conservative opinion, if your running with traffic the chances should be greatly minimized that you would get pulled. Traffic runs pretty fast these days and the troopers seem to be fairly lenient.

The thing that has saved me the most time is my GPS unit. Using it, I've shaved nearly 1.5 hrs off my trip to Maine running in packs.

Radar detectors are illegal in VA, though I hear they are talking about repealling the law. I use the '9, you're fine; 10, you're mine' rule. even on long trips. I also use the speed indicated on the gps and set my cruise control at 9 over the posted limit.
