Beltronics, Passport and Valentine one are the big players. Escort, and Bell are made in the same factory. Take a look at the new combination detector/ GPS Escort has out. Pretty nice but kind of pricey. I currently have a Bell Pro 60 in my Expd, and a Escort X50 in my G35, both are good. I rarely run more than abouit 10 percent over however, so I use mine more for a warning to check my speed.

Consider a 100 mile trip, with a consistent speed.

At 65 MPH, that trip will take 1 hour and 30 minutes.
At 75 MPH, it will take 1 hour and 20 minutes.
At 85 MPH, it will take 1 hour and 10 minutes.

Leave 10 or 20 minutes earlier. Save the fuel, the wear on the vehicle, the cost of the accident, whatever.

At last, some good advise.

100 % agree, also the cost of a speeding ticket, increase in insurance premiums. (ask me how I know).

Hence the reason why you get radar dectection/ lazer jamming devices. Not all people that get caught are doing it on purpose. Remember 99% of us or more break at least 1 law a day if not several.

Besides, if you want a new toy, you want to buy the best toy available, right?

What about using the CB radio as a 'radar Detector?' I mean, who would know better than the truckers out there where the smokies (bears, bear traps, kojaks with kodaks, etc) are?

I would assume that would work great on the intersate. In the 2lane winding backroads there are more cops then truck drivers. Travel on the interstate is not much of a issue since there is always a jockey to chase.

Round trip to my place of employment: 125 miles.

At 65 : 1:58
At 75 : 1:40
At 85 : 1:28

Thirty minutes a day, two and a half hours a week, three weeks a year. That's my annual vacation folks.

I just got back from a 640 mile round trip.

At 70 mph, my Cummins is turning 2400RPM in 6th. It redlines at 3200RPM.

A 4" stright-pipe on a Cummins at over 2k RPM is more than enough for the eardrums. That's enough for me to keep from speeding.

That, and at 2300-2400RPM, I get 21 mpg. (68-72mph). At 2500RPM, I get 17mpg. (73-75mph)

If I had a 7th or 8th gear...I would be in trouble

I believe that vehicles are best tuned to run between 55-65 mph. I would love a breakdown in the percentage of drop in economy per 5 mph driven over 60-65.

I know on large ships at sea, you eventually reach a point where the amount of fuel consumed is nearly double to reach say an additional 4-5 knots per hour.

I will admit, I'm less concerned about MPG's then getting there as soon as possible.

60-65mph on my 04 would yeild 17.5-17.8
70-75mph would yeild 15-16.4
When I went to 35" tires
70-75 stayed pretty close to the same on a long trip.
I haven't been on a lot of unloaded hwy trips in the 06. Driving 60-65 is pretty much out for me right now as time is more valuable then mpg.
The loaded trip to san antonio I took netted me 11.6mpg pulling a 16ft stock trailer loaded head to toe approx 10k total weight. Travelling 70-85mph thru the hill country on stock tuning. I'm guessing if I had gauges hooked up with that load tuned I could have made at least 13mpg based off of my previous trucks improvement on a tow tune

I don't know about cars or light trucks, but the "industry accepted figure" for class-8 trucks is a 1% decrease in fuel economy for every mile per hour increase in speed. (*note that I can't immediately verify this with a google search).

Back in the day when I was a student, I did some research involving aerodynamics and vehicles. I found it quite interesting that no equation I could find EVER went over 100 KPH. I don't know if this was because that's what common speed limits were in the day, or if the math involved got too complicated for mere pencil/paper applications.

Operationally, I know that the Freightliner's fuel economy takes a dump if I go over 70 MPH; either as a result of actually going that fast, or if my effective speed goes well into the '90's as a result of heavy headwinds. (No, my wallet does NOT like 30 MPH headwinds!!! )

Today I went a total of 386 miles in about 5 hours. That includes 3 bathroom breaks and 1 food stop. Average speed is 77.2mph. According to some of the above calculations I really wasn't even speeding since I did average less than 10mph over the posted speed limit.
