spare tire mount

How does the external tire rack attach to the body? Is it just a couple of bolts to punch through the body or is there more to it? I want to move the tire out of the back to get more space. Other option is to get a roof rack an toss the tire up there, but I wouldn't have a spare if I took the top off. Thanks.

There's a small frame inside the R taillight opening with the nuts welded to it, and another larger plate inside the t/g to hold the catch for the swingaway. You can see them in my "GP Pics" album and the tailgate album, both in my sig link.

Do yo know of any reason why I wouldn't want a 31" spare tire on a truck with 33s? The previous owner put 33s on the Bronco but left me with a 31" spare. If there's no real use for it I'm likely to ditch it and free up space in the truck. Are there any other suggestions for spare tire mounting locations other than the roof and the tailgate? Thanks.

Only other place I know of for mounting a tire would be inside the cargo area. The 31" tire would probably get you to the tire store if you ever had a blow out. Wouldn't want to drive very far on it though.

Hmm... I like those ideas. I'll have to look in to doing something like that.

Steve, where did you get the police spotlight?

What is the largest tire you can mount on the stock rear spare carrier.

Kemicalburns, for the interior rack it looks like a 31 is the biggest you can fit. It might take a 32 but you're going to rub the back seat. I have a 31 in there right now and can just get a snowboard in between the tire and the seat. One of the above links shows the stock rear carrier with a 35" tire on it. But that is likely to stress the stock mounting points a little.

Where could I get one of those interior tire mounts? Mine is just zip tied in right now. It makes a lot of noise on the vinyl floor. Would that be lessenned with a proper tire carrier?

Thats what i figured, i have the external mount on my 88 which is nice. I could always find a pizza cutter tire of the size i need to get back to a repair shop . That would keep the weight down as well.

How much weight can the Bronco's roof handle? I'm thinking of getting a roof rack and tossing the tire up top.

You know Geo I was thinking about doing that as well , but if the tire is like a 33 or bigger that could be a pain to get down and back up again. especially if you dont have a good footing . I believe the roof can hold a few hundred #'s if the rack is installed with good brackets

Hmm... there's also the problem of removing the roof and not having the tire at all.

I'd love to mount it to the hood but the sight lines would be terrible. Too bad they don't make cars like back in the 20s with the tire on the running boards.

I too have been toying with the idea of what to do with the spare tire. I just replaced the tailgate, and after seeing what the stock external tire carrier did to the metal (a 6" + rip!!) it's not going back. I would get a proper rack for the bronco (bringing all force & weight down to the side rails, rather than the roof itsel) if I were to put a full sized spare on top. The weight factor is an issue though, as it would be a bear to get a 31" tire or bigger off of the roof and back up again (especially if your changing it in the mud), plus the fact that it would be over 8' in the air by the time I got it up there. I will probably end up by making something myself in the next little while & will post pics once it's done.

Casper

I am thinking that a safari rack with the tire on top would be the best. Has anyone tried one of those with a 35" tire? My main concern would be how it effects the fuel economy and how much noise it makes.
