Well I just had to comment on this...
Ive owned over a dozen trucks (including a dodge and a chevy) and by far my 460 has been the best. I bought it used in 2000, its a 1997 F250HD Ext. Cab XL with the 460/c6. Its my daily driver right now, and ya i get crapy millage but when you stomp on the pedal and a 8800+Lb truck puts you back in our seat its soooooo worth it. There has been nothing it cant move/pull. Currently at 225k org. miles, nothing major been changed but the AC, care goes a long way for this big block.
I've driven 460's, I've driven 302s, I've driven 390s, and the best V8 I've driven had to be the 390. With the 4bbl conversion in that old 1972 F-250 it would get 15MPG with a cabover camper if you kept it out of the secondaries. That 1972 truck was hidiously fast when you had all 4 bbls going. "Want to see a trick, floor the eccelerator and watch the gas gauge move with the naked eye."
But the best Ford engine I've ever had was a 300-6. For what I do it's perfect, and all the rest is overkill in my opinion. It will do all the work any F-150/F-350 and even F-600s can handel, although it won't do it very fast, I do not see the need for speed as long as it can do the work, I'm happy.

I'm looking forward to the day that I can adopt that mentality.
I've had just about every engine option available in these trucks. I would not for one minute shy away from owning and driving a BB powered truck over a diesel. If it suits you, then thats all that matters. You are saving a little money in fuel costs and maintenance, which balances out with the slightly less MPG of the big gasser. Diesel is simply the rage right now for folks that can afford a $50k truck, much less its fuel.

Agreed...........Not much to argue about with this post.

Did you buy my '72 F250 Explorer w/the Q-Jet & 4 bbl manifold I installed? No, couldn't be since mine didn't get 15 mpg running downhill, light, w/a tailwind - either w/the 2bbl or the Q-Jet. As for when I put the 9 1/2 foot self-contained camper in, figure 9 avg. Fast? My '82 F150 Explorer w/the 351W would be a good match. I'm not knocking 390's, especially since RW's is gonna show up in my driveway soon, but I don't remember them as fondly as you.
Oh, forgot to say I'm reading this thread since I hope to get my father's '81 F150 4x4 w/a 351M soon. That engine is a ......... dog. So, I'm reading the mail on 460's and 400's since that's what'll bolt to the C6 in his truck. It currently gets 10 mpg running light on the highway, so why not get the same mpg w/a 460?
Diesel parts do cost more for certain motors. These old idi's can get a ip and injectors for less then 500 bucks, and they usually last 100k plus miles, I havent checked lately how does that compare to a 4bbl carb these days?
im not dissing the good old 460 they definitely have more power than the 6.9 i own a 6.9 and have a buddy who also has a 6.9 and another buddy with a 460 the old idi's can be upgraded decently cheap except for turbo kits that's where they get expensive.... but anyway back on topic pulling down the road i might be able to skip a gas station or 2 and my buddy that has the 460 could pass me pulling up hill and if we drag raced but he couldn't pass a gas station lol.... like has already been stated it all depends on what you are using them for and personally unless you happen to find an old diesel wrecked rusted away and already has a turbo kit... i wouldn't do the swap
