It was the battery, I took them out and took them down the street. One battery completely gone and the other battery needed to be charged. I took care of both batteries put them back in the truck and it started....The only hardest thing was the lifting the batteries out, he has a 6 inch lift and needless to say it took me a while by myself. I want to thank each and everyone of you for your advice and assistance and I should have trusted my instincts from the giddy up. I learned something from your comments and I will remember this if it ever happens again..
If you just put the old batteries in instead of replacing them, I would suggest getting two new ones. Otherwise you might have a dead truck again in the next few days. Just something to keep in mind.
As far as battery recommendations, I really like the Autozone Duralast yellow top batteries. I've had no problem cranking my truck up in cold weather with those.
Heck, I bet you could go to Autozone with the truck, purchase the batteries, and talk one of the guys into installing them for you while you're there
I am in Clarksville and a retired military guy. If you have any further problems with that truck just let me know via PM. I know how it is being deployed and am more than happy to help if I can.
Now that the truck is running, you might should check and make sure the alternator is charging.
You should see 14.4 +/- volts at the batteries if the alt. is working.
Way to hang in there and find the problem!
Thanks, I will definitely keep that in mind. I think I might be an expert before he comes back because he has also entrusted his 76 nova too me and that beast starts intermittently he does not even know what to do about its starting...Between the truck and the nova, I might know a little more than him which is scary...
I got the duralast batteries with the yellow cover, although I about passed out when I found out how much they cost and I put grease on top of them so they would not corrode..I wish the guys at autozone had done it. I ended up taking them out of the truck by myself loading them up in the car and taking them down to autozone...
testing the alternator when the rain lets up, thanks for that....now I just need to figure out his nova and then I might be good until my husband comes back...
