Just thought Id add I have the 99 v10 and love it as well. Odometer reads 205,000 miles or so and runs like a top. I think no matter what 12 mpgs is the best Ive ever seen.
Holbs10: 12 seems to be the "magic number." Any mpg above that is just icing on the cake. Conservative driving seems to give the best numbers, some of the 3.73 rear end geared trucks may do the best. Could that explain the higher mpg? What is your final gearing if I might inquire? Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure if thats the case lol. Yes the 3:73 gears offer a lower cruising RPM, but require more gas initially to get the load moving. Whereas the 4:10/4:30's don't take as much throttle to get going, but have a higer RPM over all, so in my way of thinking, gas mileage probably isn't affected "too" much by those different gear ratios, as they probably use the same amounts of gas, just in different ways. Its really all in how heavy your foot is and if your motor is running in tip top shape. But thats just my .02 lol. Either way, you're gonna be happy!
while i dont have the v10 i bought a 99 5.4 extended cab in march for 6,400 with 152,000 on it and i like it.it does what i need it to do and like you it was what i was comfotable spending.good luck.
The weakest link in that setup is the tranny, not the engine. Can't remember if you mentioned whether you had an auto or a hand shaker, but either way, the auto could run you $3,000 if it goes south, and at least $1,500 for the manual rebuild. I would be more concerned with the tranny history for sure.
Oasis report a must. See what it has been doing alll its life.
I was turned off by the 99's lack of power and horrid mileage, but all the dealers just had 3.73 geared trucks. My 01 has 3.73, but more power. I don't like the gears, but it is what I have. 4.10 trucks are a step in the right direction, but 4.30's are the ticket. If someone was wise and ordered this truck your looking at with them, I'd consider it. If not, I'd pass. It is just like having a 5.4 then, but worse mileage.
I read about a V10 that has over one million miles on it. Same motor too. His only complaint was his odometer stopped at 999999.9 miles. Would not go any higher.
I have a 99 V10 with the 5 speed stick and I like it. If I feather it I can get 13mpg on the open road. I bought it with 87k on it for $8500. It now has 112 on it and has been a good truck. I don't haul anything too heavy, fire wood, sleds, rhino, camper, a car or two. Nothing serious and it does great. I plow snow with it too with no problems.. I plan to keep it until It gets up around 180k and then send it down the road..
Thank you for all the particulars on this particular truck. The seller has had no offers at his "asking price" ; given all the above information, today's depressed economy, would $6000 be considered a "lowball" offer and an insult to the seller.
I have considered all imput with a grain of salt and realize that the transmission is the weakest link in the truck, next to the 10-12 mpg with the $3.00, and more likely headed towards $4.00 per gallon price with China and India getting on board driving their autos.
Sounds like these are nice trucks and with the attention to scheduled maintenance
the truck would last me a long time.
I would like to know what years this particular body style was offered before Ford made the changes to this series; I had been told the new 2011s' are basically the same body style with subtle changes. What year did these changes in styling occur.
I have learned about the improvements over the years to the V10 and if I understand it is no longer offered.
Offering $6000 on a $6800 asking is a bit of a lowball, but if done respectfully, not an insult. It is merely an offer.
Call him. Tell him it is a fine looking truck, and that $6800 is a fair asking price. BUT, but the highest YOU feel comfortable paying for a '99 model is $6K. Cash.
I've found that approach to be far more effective than telling them they are asking too much. That is disrespectful and triggers an adversarial negotiation. To get the best deal from a private seller, you want to avoid that.
So say, "yeah, it's worth what you're asking, and I want it. But at the risk of offending you, would you be in a position to consider $6K?"
If he is motivated, he can go there without feeling like you are dissing him.
Most folks want their "babies" to go to good homes, and will let them go for less if they realize you are a good person who truly appreciates the rig and how they've taken care of it. Respect goes a long way.
And if they say no, ask if they will can give you a couple weeks to try and scrape up more cash, and leave your number. Sometimes you get a pleasant call back in a couple days. And sometimes, of course, they find another buyer and you miss out. All part of the game.
The V10 is Ford's best kept secret. It is a great engine. I had one for 3 years and traded it in on a 7.3. The only downside to the V10, besides the mileage, is they are hard to sell when gas goes up, like right now.
Make an offer that you think is fair. If the current owner went to trade it in, they would offer him auction price only, maybe $3500.00.
