Cab & chassis F450/550 axles are rated for 7,000# max 905-up)in the front, or only 6,000# for 04 down. Usually come with lighter springs though. The F550 rear is rated for 13,660# or 14,706# (with payload plus option recently available) The F450 cab/chassis rear is rated at 12,000# or only 11,000# for 99-04 cab chassis f450's. You would need to know what your IH weighs loaded to know which axles would be enough.

Cool,so the earlier f450 front axle could handle a 6v71 detroit with ease then, right?

A 6V-71 is 2000 pounds, give or take, so yes, you're safe, unless the front of your 1972 IH is over 6000 pounds without the engine.

I'm thinking an IH with a 2000# engine has to weigh over 6,000# on the front axle, unless the engine is behind the axle. I'd be looking for 05 up 550 axles if I were you. 10 lug, disc front and rear. My 09 F550 weighs 5840 on the front axle with just a V10!

Currently as a cab and chassis I weigh in at 4500 lbs. Truck is a 72 ih 1210 pickup,so with engine I should be around 2500 with axle up front
