<hr style="color: rgb(255, 255, 255); background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" size="1"> I was going down the road with my 08 f550 4x4 and the transfer case split in half!
I was doing 55 to 60mph on pavement in 2 wheel drive, hubs were unlocked and (bang) she split the front wheel drive half of the case right off.
The case is all manual and I didn't hit anything on the road. I pulled the case apart and everything on the inside is ok nothing is broke not even the chain. The rear axle and front axle are both ok
What could have caused this?
I don't want to take the new one out and I have a hard time marking this one up as a freak thing to happen!
Any help would be great
Thanks
Stan
We have had 2 do it in 05 models. Manual transfer cases that split around where the chain is. Chain not bad or overly loose. Nothing bad internally. Always on the highway in 2 wheel drive. neither had even been anywhere to engage the 4x4 that day.
I wondered was it b/c the driver always left the hubs locked in place but was assured by ford engineers that would not cause it. Had the driveshafts checked with no problems found. I think the case is weak but thats just my opinion.

My drive shafts looked fine till I went to put the front one back on and found that the CV joint was missing the center of it. All you can see on the front drive shaft is the 2 u joints not the ball in between the two. I have a good felling that is what caused this!
