Engine Swap?

New to the Ford thing still...

Anyways, after the last snow storm, got stuck in a drift, told the wife I'd push she hit the gas... the gas was then pummeled by an iron foot....

long story short, my 4.2 is toast... its knocking really bad, wont hold oil pressure when warm...

How much work is it to put a 4.6 in? How different are the wiring harnesses?

Lay down:
1997 F150 new style
4.2 V6 106K miles (so little...)
RWD

Would the bell housings bolt up with a 4.6? Is it possible? Worth it?

I know nothing about my 4.2 trans, and how different the 4.6 trans is, or even the 5.4, which trans is built for what, or if its a standard RWD trans, etc.
im not worried about the computer... that can be an easy pick up, maybe some tips on where I can get it tuned? to adapt with the V8, my cluster, and the trans?

or, as I'm reading more and more, it almost seems that it may be cheaper to bore and hone the cylinders, possibly get a new crankshaft (or reman mine), and get all new pistons and rings... used engines, 4.2, 4.6, are all over 1k, rebuilding those parts on mine would cost roughly 600, which is what I was hoping to spend

4.2L and 4.6L/5.4L use different bell housing patterns, so you'll need the trans from a 4.6L/5.4L truck. You'll also need the PCM, wiring harnesses, cluster, etc, etc, etc. NOT a cheap swap. Pretty straightforward, but not cheap unless you can find a complete donor vehicle..

That may not seem like much, but after driving both in our fleet truck environment, I can tell you that trucks equipped with the same trans, rear axle, and equipment configuration-it's a night and day difference. the 4.6L is FAR superior in an F150 than the 4.2L is. Lifespan, fuel efficiency, and towing/hauling ability are better. I'll put it like this-all of the trucks we had with the 4.2L have long been gone from here due to too many major mechanical failures. The 4.6L trucks and vans are still here working to this date, and have had no major mechanical failures.

just seems to me it would be cheaper and easier to get another truck. can you live without a truck for a few weeks? because it could take that long to do this swap.
