How to mount an A/C compressor when using headers?
My 74 Camper Special Supercab was factory equipped with air. I was living in Oregon and didn't want air. Now in Phoenix, Az it is too hot to drive about 3 months except evening and early morning. I am using full length exhaust headers and plan to keep them. Has anyone else been here and solved this problem? I also hate the huge box in the engine compartment and want to remove the box and place maybe a factory a/c option in there instead. I understand that if I do this the size of the holes in the firewall might need modification. I am pretty creative and have no problem trying to rig up a good a/c unit from another used vehicle with a good functioning a/c system. Funny, now I don't need heat and do need a/c. My engine is a 460 with power steering. I am also using an updated alternator on the passenger side. Is there any good a/c compressor that might fit on my engine? Any trick setup such as a Nissan system for the Ford truck? Looks like more room on the passenger side for an a/c compressor. The stock a/c bracket used to mount to a forward facing boss on the exhaust manifold and to the p/s pump, it won't work now with the headers. Anyone here from the Phoenix area that might want to get together sometime? Thank you, Roy
Correct, what I'd like to do is find a evaporator/fan setup that mounts more inside the cab instead of inside the engine compartment. Thats why I was mentioning the Nissan system. I can rig up hoses to my existing ductwork my problem is how to mount the compressor to a header equipped 460 engine. I understand the dealer option a/c is a smaller unit that might work better for me, but I have not seen one in person. Thanks for the reply. Roy
Thank you for the reply, I will try to find that dealer box, inside the cab is exactly what I need. It is so hard working on the passenger engine bank, I hate doing anything down there.
