Back-Up Camera

I decided not to go with a head unit with a video screen, therefore has anyone had any good experiences with separate back-up camera systems?

Most any of them will be fine. I have the 3.5 screen mounted just above my rearview mirror. I think it is perfect up there. Out of sight from outside, right were you would naturally look while backing up and doesn't clutter the dash. Turns on with shift lever in reverse. I have the wireless one, that just crapped out after 2 yrs use. It got water inside it. I have just a camera coming from ebay that I will wire direct, which will have a little less interference when in use. When I upgrade to a new in dash dvd it will intigrate nicely in there, and I can loose the little screen.
Some have found them in local stores for under $40.00 with monitor and all. Good luck.

How well do the inexpensive wireless versions work with the distance from the screen to the back end up a crew cab longbed?

The wireless ones work great for a lot of people but... they are subject to interference and less than great video output. You can get a decent day/night camera for under $20, about $30 worth of direct wire power/video cable, a monitor of your liking and you're done.

Well I used to have the wireless camera, and it worked well for the most part. A little fuzzy at first start up and then only once in a while when you were close to interference. While that camera itself is now water logged and for the life of it would only turn on in the dry and very cold weather, like I said I got a new one from eBay. $20 for a nice small camera, power leeds, and 5m of video cable for direct feed. It took longer to wire in the power than the video, and my screen from before came with a video in so all is well.

I would have to say the picture quality is considerably better, and always clear. If you have sat in a newer car with stock backup camera you know what I mean. Like said above get everything separate off eBay or order a wired kit. The picture wireless was adequate, but the wired in video is better.

I ended up going with an in-dash, double DIN DVD Pioneer unit that I use for my monitor. That was about the same time I bought a 10.2" rear view monitor that clips over your existing rear view mirror. It's got dual inputs, reverse sense, remote etc. PM me if you're interested. Still new in box.
