I not long ago got my first FWD truck 97 XLT 4.2 . And for the life of me I can't figure out how to get it out 2 HI in to any other range. When I pull on the shifter it won't move like it is locked or something. Oh by the way it is a manual 5 speed .
I tried putting the gear shifter in neutral and pulling on the FWD shifter and nothing . Could there be an electrical something going on ? Is there a switch connected to the clutch pedal that could have gone bad.
It is not a piority at this time because I have it torn down for head gaskets , but I just like to know . Thanks in advance
pretty sure all you have to do is put it in neutral and push down on the t-case lever and then pull back. you might have an issue with froze up linkage, or tweeked linkage that is binding. easiest way to figure it out is crawl under there and take a look. never hurts to spray it all up with some kind of lubricating oil.
Thanks I never thought to push down . I pulled up on it tried to push it to the side. Hummmmmm I'll try to push down Thanks again and if that don't do it I'll crawl under it like ya said . The PO said it worked i'll see though
typical problem with those 4X4 shifters.
the shifter brackets are made out of aluminum, and get all cheesy from lack of use. worst case scenario is you are gonna have to take it off and apart to clean it up and lube it all up before reassembling it.
