First Oil Change

My F-350 DRW KR will be here with a week. I plan to put on at least 500+ miles before hooking up and heading for warmer weather. I tow a 12K 5er and will probably travel up to 4000 miles. I have always changes the first oil early and then every 3000 miles. Oil & filters were cheap to keep both my 6.0 fords running. Had an early 03 and 05 with no problems. I am thinking that 3000 miles on the 6.7 factory oil will the OK? What do you think?

Ford has given no instruction that the oil needs to be changed early. They have gone out of their way to state that we should only change when the truck tells us to. I changed at 5,000 miles mostly to find out how the new drain plug worked and the oil analysis showed everything normal for a new engine.

I changed mine at 5,000 because the first oil change was free. Otherwise I will change when the truck tells me to, like Ford intended.

Every 3,000 miles is a bit much; unnecessary in my opinion(and Ford's!)

I've already seen enough oil analysis sheets, including one from Epic, to convince me that the Ford system is pretty good on these trucks.

Epic, if I remember right yours was after 5,000 miles and showed plenty of life left on the oil?

Modern oils last MUCH longer than the ones of old; my wife's new 2011 Toyota calls for 10,000 mile oil change intervals!

Yes, my sample was normal but the fuel content was 4%. Ford says my driving style (many short trips without the engine making it to operating temperature) will create the highest fuel dilution. The engineers said no need to worry until fuel content is greater than 7%.

That sounds good to me. It is hard to get over the 3k changes. I think we were taken down that path by the oil companys. I wasn't looking forward to a oil change on the road and I should have 5000 miles on it when I get back home. Looking forward to the first pull, will post some MPGs when I get back.

Now I have some questions about the first oil change myself. When the message comes across the message center to change the oil...does it say change in 500 miles or something or does it just say...change oil now...What is in my future fellow members?
Like he said...i'd hate to be 400 miles into my 1600 mile trip and have it say change the oil..when I could have been pre warned before I left home...you know something like the GM has where it tells you your oil is at xx%
Another thing is...what is the procedure for getting y'alls oil analysis from Blackstone?

The first oil minder warning says "change oil soon". The second warning says 'replace engine" just kidding...I changed the first time at 5000 miles and my oil minder came up 6800 miles after the first change. At 7000 miles I have not seen it yet.

When you see "change oil soon", how far you still can run? some of my jobs require 1000 miles on the interstate. I wish it had xx% gauge.

Per the Diesel Supplement...

For your convenience, your vehicle is equipped with a message center which determines the proper oil change service interval. You should perform the engine oil change as indicated by the message center. The message center will display ENGINE OIL CHANGE SOON or OIL CHANGE REQUIRED to indicate when an oil change is needed. The engine oil change service needs to be completed within two weeks or 500 miles (800 km) after the OIL CHANGE REQUIRED message is displayed. Your oil change service interval can be up to one year or 10,000 miles (16,000 km) depending on operating conditions. Reset your Intelligent Oil Life Monitor™ after each engine oil and filter change; refer to the Instrument Cluster chapter of the Owner’s Guide.

the oil will last along time. the limiting factor is the oil contamination which leads to greater wear in the engine. every engine is different on this but most fall into a common range. which is why i say test your oil and find your happy medium. no reason to spend 50k on a truck then skimp on a $22 oil test.

Those who are in the "know" about how a modern engine is assembled know that it is impossible to clean all the metal shavings / particles / etc. out of a new engine.

If you are aiming for 300,000 plus miles, you change oil and filter like this:

- use recommended dino oil

- first change at 100 miles. (yes, 100)

- next change at 250

- then 500

- followed by 1,000

- then 2,500

- after that 5,000

From then on, you follow factory recommended with dino once more.

Then you switch to synth for the following change, after engine is thoroughly broken in.
