I was just curious that I've send no discussions on this forum about the esof, but on the super duty forum it is the number one suggestion. So problems in previous years is obvious...anything change in 2011. Btw, too late for me.
I think its optional on the XLT and Xl, but standard equipment on the Lariat and King Ranch. We are talking about the Electronic Shift on The Fly right?
Yes, shift on the fly is what I was questioning. That would make sense since I never saw any option for it on the order info I looked at. I was just curious as to why it wasn't discussed much here on the 2011 forum but it is in other places. Let's just hope that it holds up better than in previous years.

Just curious because I have never heard of any problems, what have they been? You can always manually lock them if you are concerned of them unlocking.
Bascially they "auto" hubs never locked, atleast thats the problems I've had on my trucks. So in a sense most fords are manual hubs despite paying the upcharge for esof in previous years. Hopefully they fixed it on 2011. Snow was predicted here so I did find a nice gravel road to try mine out and it did engage, but we'll see if the same holds true a year from now.
Over time the shift motor in the T-case can also go bad, which can prevent going into, or out of, 4x4.
It's simply not quite as reliable as the old-fashioned manual option. I liked my manual system on my '08, but I like the ESOF better, simply because I don't have to burn the fuel to leave the hubs locked in all the time if I might need 4x4. Just turn the **** and GO.
A few years down the road my opinion may change...

My brother has had several issues with his 2008 F350. They have replaced the same left hub twice (speaking with him on Friday, it looks like number 3 is on the way). And in the first two cases it was the auto hub not locking.
I usually consider multiple failures of the same part, especially if there are not a lot of similar failures, a repair process issue. I have never had an issue but maybe I am just lucky...but if you heard my 6.0 engine woes story, you would not think so...

I am curious if the ones that have problems are vehicles that do not use the 4x4 much. I have never had any problems, but then again I live in Buffalo, gets plenty of exercise.
My '06 went through several vacuum pump motors, that wouldn't generate enough oomph to engage the hubs. You would know it was failing when it took longer and longer to engage.
The only time Ive had any issues with any shift on the fly systems was in my chevys that had that actuator motor on the front end and they got really slow or didn't work at all. Never had a problem on any of my fords.

I'm with you. On my 08 I ordered manual transfer case because I always had them in the past with no issues. I had an 02 ESOF that gave me problems within the hub seals only. But since I've moved to Northern NH I'm constantly in and out of 4x4 around my house, town, etc. So my 2011 has ESOF and I am glad. I don't think you can delete it and go manual while ordering a Lariet.
If they had auto locking hubs like GMC had back in 85 it might be different.
With the ELA we stand a chance of moving on if the transfer case motor fails. Maybe we could change the motor down the road before it fails. Pricey but it would bring some insurance.
