Went to get the christmas tree today about 15 miles away, Its raining and nasty outside and I stopped and got $20 in gas on the way. Truck ran fine on the way down, as soon as I started it to leave I noticed it was running rough. Drove it home and its sputtering, sounds like it might be missing on a cylinder. The exhaust smells really bad too, like sulfur. I live in a tiny town and there is only one auto parts store and its closed on sunday so I had some sta-bil marine formula so I dumped some of that in.
Im not sure if this is related to the rain, or maybe the gas I got, or maybe just needs a tune up. The truck is a 99 and its got 112k on it. It had 80k on it when I got it so not sure if the plugs and wires have been changed yet.
I was thinking I'd get a set of plugs, wires, and a fuel filter and see if that took care of it.. Its got a fresh oil change... Any other suggestions??? Whats the best place to get the stuff I need to tune this baby up, any online retailers I could order it all from???
You probably got a dose of bad gas with some water or other crap in it. The marine Stabil is good stuff it will help to clean and protect the engine and fuel system. Add 1oz. per 5 gallons of that stabil and ad some water remover when you can. Fill up will some higher octane fuel to help make up for the loss in octane from the bad fuel.
I would change the plugs and COPs soon but first I'd rule out the gas being the issue.
My neighbor kept filling up at a local station (that I won't and never went to) because they had the cheapest gas. That worked for him until he got bad gas in both his cars from the station. He said it took him 6 months and 3 trips to the dealer until his 150 was back to normal.
The "sulfur" you smell is the unburnt gas being burned off in the exhaust and the catalytic converter is working overtime converting the hydrocarbons.
Do the tuneup, and change the fuel filter. Just to make sure it's not fuel or something else laying in the bottom of the tank, take the fuel line from the rear of the fuel filter, put it into a bucket, secure it in case it moves, and cycle the ignition key from off-to-on a few times. Check the bucket. If it's nice clean fuel, move on.
I live in SoCal and it's been raining for days. I started my 99 V10 SD for the first time since Friday and it's missing... argh!!!
I'm sure the missing is an ignition issue. I recall having this happen last rainy season and having the dealer replace a coil. Since it's been raining I don't think I have a bad coil. Something is just wet..
I recall reading on FTE that the ( I think it's #5, the passenger side closest to the firewall ) is prone to problems during rainy seasons.
Any suggestion how I can dry out the wires/cop?
Thanks,
AC

I think it's water going down the spark plug cavity, pooling in there and causing a short if the rubber boot is dry rotted and cracked. You'll need to blow it out with an air gun and replace the boot. If you haven't changed the plugs and are due, then I would change all the plugs and boots.
funny i have the same thing happen to me my wife has been driving it then she said it just started to sputter and run rough when i got in it was much worse than just one cop being out been thru that lol so i took my obd tool and checked for codes it came up with about 5 of the fuel injectors bad wtf how can so many just go out at once does a little rain really screw these trucks up that bad thought it was a 4x4 what use is it if a little rain screws it up.. still trying to figure these out going to check all the injectors with a meter tomorrow. we will see if it was just the rain or good old ford quality...
It seems like no one ever follows up with the cure to the problem. My 99 is sick right now also, no CEL yet though. It is missing, pinging under load and seems to have an exhaust manifold leak, Banks headers installed 1 year ago. I am going to replace all boots as they have never been done in 82K miles (plugs at 65k) and move around 1 good COP and hopefully find the problem. I have had more nagging maintenance problems with this truck in 3 years of ownership at moderate albeit heavy use than 11 years on my Chev Tracker.
What was you guys cures? Yesterday I got out and found my truck had a miss on accel and rough idle. My truck has never done this so I removed the cop boot's and plugs to check them (although they only have about 10,000 miles on them) The plugs look good and the cop boots looked fine so I put anti-seize on the plugs, Dialectric grease on the boots and putting it all back together.. I then fired it up to appear to run fine but after a couple miles of driving the miss came back.. I am now thinking it is a bad cop or injector.. What do you think?

I had to replace two coils now since I got the truck about a year and a half ago. I also added zip ties on the injector clips. It makes them like brand new and I am sure they are staying put. The zip ties go around the push clips at the injector and you still can remove them by squeezing.
