Ok, looking for some advice. I just got a 2008 F-450 6.4L with 38K on it. The radiator was replaced at 20K. The truck has been serviced faithfully and oil changed every 5K. Now it is my responsibility to maintain the truck. I've never had a diesel and need your advice (the experts) on what to check, what to do to keep this great truck running. Does anyone have a spreadsheet on this or maybe a list? Thanks for your help, guys.

Did you get the diesel supplement to the owners manual, the standard stuff is in there. I would say most of the regulars on this forum use the heavy duty schedule plus. And we check stuff at least weekly including oil, coolant, oil cooler, fuel filters, drain the lower fuel filter at least monthly and change both of them on the heavy duty schedule. If you don't have the book schedules cmon back and let us know. Also you should read the top threads on maintaining the truck. the ones at the very top of the first page on this forum. You might also want to search the following terms and read a little, DPF, DPF Delete, spartan. CAC white smoke, egr, HPFP. If you read up on that stuff you will learn a lot about your truck. Bottom line is the 6.4L seems to love those who maintain the chit out of it and punish those who don't. Welcome aboard, this is a great forum with a lot of good info on it. I've learned a lot about my truck from these guys who are on her regular.
Not much to add that Stanley did not cover.
I'd suggest some light reading. Powerstroke 6.4L Bible Page
That is the link for the 6.4 bible. I does a pretty good job of most of the major items we all talk about.
I use my truck primarily to tow my 5'er, so I don't drive much on a monthly basis. But I do drain my fuel filter regularly. I drain it for about 20 seconds but it shows no sign of slowing down during that period. Does this filter housing actually drain completely or is the 20 seconds adequate?

The idea is to get enough fuel into a clear glass so you can see if there is any water in it. I don't think it would take more than 20 seconds worth to see the water. That of course depends on the flow rate, mine is kinda whimpy but I've never timed it. I just go for 3 inches or so in a big clear container I have just for that purpose. When I'm done I of course take the bottle to a local recycling center to empty it (yeah right). On ocassion I have found small water droplets in mine and they are easy to see, you won't miss them. I don't know for sure where the "too much water" line is but it's like beauty, when I see it I think I will know it's too much water in the sample.
