I have a 1968 F250 390ci. It's been sitting for a lot of its life the last few years. Before it got driven to my house it had been sitting for a long while (undetermined). On the way here it had about $10 worth of gas put in. I was told it ran good, but it died mid-drive. Also the last owner said it might have a bad fuel tank switch and also the last owner added his own switch and that it was running on the reserve tank. I took off the line to the carb and was getting fuel so I took off the carb and had it cleaned and was told there was a chunk of something blocking the jets. So I put it back on and unplugged the line going to the fuel pump and emptied out the fuel, which I'm assuming is from the reserve tank.
Almost to my question.... When I put the hose back on to the fuel pump it sprung a leak because the hose is old so I pulled it back off, and in doing so, took off the metal nipple that the fuel hose goes over. I didn't wrench on it, bend it, or even work it that hard. It just came off clean. So I tried to put it back in as hard as I could and start it but now I'm not getting fuel to the carb. I tried switching back and forth both switches but nothing
Question: Does the pump need to create a suction to pull the new fuel to the pump? I'm thinking it does because I dumped 10 gallons of new fuel in and nothing came out by gravity.
yes the fuel pump does create suction to draw out the fuel.but from what i have learned from experience is if the truck sat for a long time then i would replace all of the rubber fuel line on the truck you might have a hole somewhere and you might be sucking air instead of gas.just my opinion
Well I got fuel to the Carb before I took the carb off. After I put it back on I disconnected the fuel line from the tank to the pump to dump the fuel out. But I disconnected after I turned over the motor and saw it coming to the carb. The only variable is I disconnected that line and had that metal piece come off with it. So that's why I'm thinking vacuum issue. And you confirming it exists leads me to believe that's the issue
